Skilled Nursing Rehab Nightmare

At first our family believed Cypress Village Assisted Living/Memory Care and Skilled Nursing would be a perfect fit for my parents who are at different levels of care needs. The facility looks impressive but isn’t as great as you may first think. This was our experience. My mother was admitted to their Rehab Center suffering with a variety of issues, including dementia and Urinary Tract infections. After about a week they determined they didn’t want to keep her in Rehab and set to discharge her with a definitive date, with no home to go to or another skilled nursing/Rehab facility lined up.

I was traveling out of the country at that time. No other family in Jacksonville. Our whole family was shocked and highly unnerved. I appealed to let her stay for a few more weeks from out of the country as we had also scheduled various tests and specialist appointments at MAYO Clinic in the ensuing weeks. I never got an adequate response other than communicating to other family that they would not extend the discharge date even a few weeks. They reported she was not making sufficient progress in therapy, thus for Medicare reasons, had to discharge her. I believe this was highly misrepresented and is contrary to the 3-4 therapy sessions I personally witnessed right before leaving for my vacation abroad. Other therapists applauded her efforts. Despite her conditions, she was still making strides.

Their lack of compassion and reasonableness under the circumstances was ludicrous, unprofessional and insensitive. Thankfully we were immediately able to get her into the Mayo Hospital and then discharged by MAYO to another Rehab. She continues to now make progress under care of a variety of Mayo Specialists who are on a path to change her medications that were determined to be ineffective for several reasons. She’s made great improvement in the last 3 weeks. She’s almost standing alone, walking with a walker and her appetite and mood have improved.

How shortsighted Cypress was in not giving our family a reasonable period of time to help her. Do you think a week of therapy is adequate to say Medicare requires us to discharge her since she’s not showing good improvement? How would you feel if this happened to your Mom or Dad?

Personally, I wouldn’t send my loved ones to Brookdale Cypress Village. If you do, I caution that this might happen to your loved one.

We appreciate you sharing your feedback and are sorry to hear Cypress Village did not meet your expectations. We would like to assure you the safety and well-being of our residents is our top priority, and we have policies and procedures in place to ensure this. We would welcome an opportunity to discuss with you further and encourage you to reach out to our local management team.

this looks really good, but looks expensive until we need assistance and get insurance rebates.

We have selected this community. They offer a large variety of activities for independent seniors. The residents are friendly and seem very happy. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The staff has been beyond friendly and supportive through this process.

So glad that I'm here

Cypress Village is terrific and a good fit for me. There are more activities than I could ever take part in and I enjoy the ones I do. There are Sock Hops with a DJ playing 50's music. I have signed up to take a couple of field trips as well.
Our main dining area has a community table for the new residents and the long time residents join us so that we socialize with everyone. There is also a bistro and a Fancy dining room that you can pick from. They all 3 have Fabulous food.
We also have a resident doctor here 1 day a week and a 24hr wellness clinic.
I am so glad that my advisor finally convinced me to come and check Cypress Village what a wonderful service you offer.

Healthcare Center

Cypress village is a place that anyone that needs services should be here.

Really nice place!

We really liked this community. The staff were very friendly and super helpful with all of our questions. The community layout though was just a little tight for all the residents. The community was well kept.

Not Impressed

I was not impressed with my tour of this facility. It was not community I would had felt comfortable moving my parents too.

Happy Resident

My husband and I moved into a Cypress Village apartment, when I was sixty-three years old. My classmates and cousins kept saying I’m too young. I told them that I wanted the turnkey, carefree and worry free lifestyle of a CCRC. I also wanted to be young enough to participate in all the activities, trips and health programs proved by the extremely capable and friendly staff. I’ve found the residents to be very inviting, helpful and inclusive. The meals and treats are delicious. So now I have to watch my waistline.

A Great Place to Live

I have lived in our own home here for close to a year now. I have not regretted it. The surroundings are beautiful; the people are diverse, friendly and caring; the activities are numerous. There is almost everything you could want here.

I have become more independent

I recently moved to an active senior independent living community called Cypress Village in Jacksonville, Florida. Although I have low vision, it was not the main reason for my move. However, there is a professional who provides suggested lifestyle changes for individuals with low vision. As a result of the many opportunities here at Cypress Village, I have become more independent. The transportation department is equipped with several modern buses and limousines. I now have access to several venues including shopping, sports events, entertainment, sightseeing, doctor appointments and special events.

Maintenance-Free Lifestyle

The Cypress Village maintenance department makes my life here so easy. Whatever goes wrong is fixed with one simple call to Maintenance. You don’t worry about who to call or how much it will cost. You call and state your problem. Someone arrives promptly with a courteous smile. Whether you have a plumbing issue or an air conditioner problem or whatever, the repair gets done with ease.

Peace of Mind

We moved to Cypress Village in 2012 after thoroughly examining three other retirement communities in Jacksonville. We wanted a maintenance-free house with a two car garage, half of which I needed for my home workshop. An unexpected plus was the Resident Workshop Club which has a complete range of woodworking and metalworking equipment. We still travel a fair amount, so the central alarm system and security patrols provide peace of mind for us while we are away from home. The many clubs and activities at Cypress Village provide us with abundant opportunities for socializing and exercise.

Great feature- Cypress Village Library

The Cypress Village library has an eclectic collection of books, media materials, newspapers, and magazines. There is a Telesensory VM600 low vision magnifier available for use. Volunteers work many hours to keep the collection ready for the many residents who use it frequently.

A Vibrant Retirement Community

Margit and I moved to Cypress Village two years ago and we couldn’t be happier with our decision. Cypress Village is a vibrant retirement community with a lively social life and seemingly endless amenities. We have an indoor aquatic center, a deli, a bistro, state of the art exercise equipment, a workshop, a beauty/barber salon, multiple dining options, concierge services, transportation, numerous planned activities and much more.

Freedom from the mundane tasks of security, maintenance, housekeeping and cooking allows us the time to enjoy the many options we consider important. There is so much to do that we have to pick and choose our activities wisely. Fortunately we are free to participate as little or as much as we want.

Some residents choose the single family homes that are available but we prefer our beautiful apartment overlooking Cypress Lake. We also enjoy our location here in Jacksonville, Florida. The offerings of a major city are available to us including the arts, theatre, and the Jaguars NFL team. The Mayo Clinic is less than a mile away and Jacksonville Beach is within three miles.

A major factor in our decision to move to Cypress Village was the LifeCare Contract which allows us to relax and enjoy our retirement knowing we have a secure healthcare future. Lastly, our daughter will never have to be concerned about what to do with her aging parents!

Living the Dream!

In 2014 we both reached age 80 and, looking to the future, decided some lifestyle changes for our remaining years were in order. We had visited retirement communities in the past and had attended “lunch and learn events” but were not at the time ready to act. Now we were, so we started looking in earnest. After contacting one local retirement facility (in which we were very interested), we then visited Cypress Village. We heard a presentation by the staff, toured an available garden home, made up our minds immediately, and wrote a deposit check that afternoon. We have not looked back since then. We love the stress-free environment, our new home, the many activities available, and the excellent meals in the dining facility. In summary, we are “Living the Dream”!

Long-Time Residents Enjoy Cypress Village

Walt and I moved to Cypress Village fourteen years ago at our daughter's urging. We lived in Massachusetts and she didn't want to come to the cold northeast to care for her aging parents. Two years later Walt survived a brain aneurysm operation thanks to good Mayo surgeons - he is still hanging in there at 92. When we first arrived we were very active in the Croquet Club and I am still involved. For many years the Art League kept me very busy. It is important to choose a retirement community while you are still able to enjoy all the activities they offer. Walt & I enjoyed the exercise classes & rarely missed a dance. And it was only a five minute drive from our home to the Egret Hall for the many entertainments offered. Even though we were in an independent home we enjoyed all the amenities. Cypress Village has been an excellent choice for us - we have made some wonderful friends here.

We highly recommend Cypress Village!

My mother has been a resident in the memory care at Cypress Village they call Clare Bridge for a year this month. While her ability to take care of herself has diminished, we(my wife and I) are more than aware of all the care she receives from each and every person who works there. While there have been some changes in staff since she has lived there, we find an excellence in all of them. When we need answers to medications or treatment Vicky, the head nurse always stops her routine and immediately helps us. When I ask about day to day care needs, Karen, a daily nurse is extremely helpful, as is Alicia and Jane (who works Fridays only). One of the biggest positive changes we've seen is the addition of Karen the Director of Activities on Clare Bridge. She is a jolt of energy and is sincerely concerned about the daily activities of the residents. My mother recently started having issues with not wanting to shower and the Assisted Living Director implemented some new changes to help encourage and make that chore more enjoyable for her. Resident Care Associates we see regulary are Lisa, Lenore, Candace and a relatively new person Anja- They are fantastic! We are well pleased and would highly recommend Cypress Village, Clare Bridge as a facility for your loved ones.

Pleasant Facility

I am very pleased with the way they do things from the care services, food, cleaning, activities and outdoor activities. My loved one is happy about being here and haven't hear any bad new or anything about Cypress Village.

My mother has been in the assisted living here for several years and I have been very pleased!

Happy with Cypress Village

I moved my husband into the memory care unit at Cypress Village called Clare Bridge. I toured just about every community in Jacksonville because I wanted to find the very best place for my husband. It was a difficult decision to make but finally decided on Clare Bridge. I have been very happy with my decision and have only wonderful things to say about the staff. I am happy I found a memory care that has male residents that are as active as my husband is. Most places I visited were depressing and I didn't see my husband being able to communicate with the others living there.I am confused by the previous review saying the care was a' La carte because the pricing is all inclusive. This one of the reasons I chose this community. I like knowing what my monthly rate is each month. I am glad I called them about their memory care because I was told it was a community where you had to put a lump sum of money down. This was not true. Having my husband in a memory care community is never easy but I am glad I found a place that provides great care and allows me to have a little bit of a life [removed]

Very nice looking place!

All of my dealings with the people from Cypress Village have been wonderful! The facility itself is beautiful, they have an excellent meal service, and I love that all of their care services are offered a la carte.

Short changed by Cypress Village

My mother lived here for over 11 years and was mostly satisfied although her rent was raised each and every year. But after a series of strokes last January, she ended up in CV's Health Center. When her Medicare was about to run out in March, my brother was advised to put her in CV's new Memory Unit despite the fact she seemed to have no memory problems. So he signed the papers and deposited over $7000 for the first month's rent plus a "community fee." But the day our mother was scheduled to move into the Unit she took a turn for the worse and was dead within 48 hours. While she was in Hospice we learned she had been dying for weeks if not months, something we feel the medical staff at CV should have been aware of. Since our mother never moved into the Memory Unit and her rent was paid up for the month of March, we expected a full refund of our money. But CV only refunded a portion of it, keeping over $3700 for the 9 days from when the contract was signed even though NO services were rendered. We are still fighting to get the rest of the money back but CV continues to ignore us. Brookdale Cypress Village is all about the bottom line, especially since merging with Emeritus in August -- now they are the biggest conglomerate providing senior living in the country. Buyers beware!

Brookdale's CV short-changed us when mother died

While she was in Hospice we learned she had been exhibiting most of the final signs of dying, something we feel the medical staff at CV should have been aware of. Since our mother never moved into the Memory Unit and her rent was paid up for the month of March, we expected a full refund of our money. But CV only refunded a portion of it, keeping over $3700 for the 9 days from when the contract was signed even though NO services were rendered. The incentive they offer for purchasing one of their apartments is the promise to ultimately use that money toward any Assisted Living needed in the future. But this is also an incentive for Cypress Village to keep your parent in their facility for as long as possible so as not to refund a portion of the purchase price after your parent dies. So my warning to you is this: BUYER BEWARE!

Convenient Location and Beautiful Building

It is a beautiful location, right there there by the Mayo Clinic. A lot of people would pay just for that convenience. It's beautiful, but a little overpriced because the units are pretty small. My dad didn't like that. It is all in a 7 story tower, like a tower or something that you would see in the middle of a city. No surrounding grounds per se, and you have to ride elevators to get to each floor.

too big

It was way too big for mom. She likes small communities and bridge so that wouldn't have worked for her
