The End of the Rainbow

A dear family friend moved into Stonewall Gardens in June 2018, and if Stonewall didn't literally save his life, it certainly made it worth living again.

Everyone has the same first impression of Stonewall: "Wow, this place is nice!" Stonewall is well-designed, beautifully landscaped and perfectly maintained. But after many visits and through many interactions with Stonewall's professional staff, I've learned that the facility is fully as beautiful "on the inside." Stonewall's managers really do take sincere personal interest in the residents, and they really do work hard to make the Stonewall experience as beneficial as it can be for everyone.

Before coming to Stonewall, my friend had failed to thrive anywhere, and his family was desperate. Since finding this safe haven in gorgeous, gay-friendly Palm Springs, my friend has regained not only his health but his personality and his hope for the future.

Thank you, Stonewall!

Safe and supportive

Stonewall Gardens has been a blessing for my friend Jeff (not his real name). Before he came there he was in another residence that was not overtly homophobic, but with his history of discrimination he felt isolated. Today, despite ongoing challenges that he faces from hearing loss and other difficulties, he is much more like his old self, less anxious and worried. The staff at Stonewall Gardens are terrific and the other residents care about and support each other. I enjoy visiting my friend there myself. This is a much needed service and there should be more places like Stonewall Gardens.

Best Assisted Living Facility Ever!

Stonewall Gardens was a life saver. My brother Had been living in an Assisted Living facility in Sacramento, and was having a bad experience. A friend recommended i check out Stonewall Gardens, so i flew down and had a tour. What a difference! I’m so happy we moved him there. It’s ideal especially for a dog lover because there’s enclosed outdoor space and the apt patios can be gated as well to allow the dogs to be outside. The staff were so friendly and informative and so accommodating when a vacancy opened up and we needed to move in right away.

I can’t say enough especially about the the welcoming vibe once my brother moved in. And having facility transportation available, plus all the activities provided meant my brother found a true accepting community. He’s in the best health, and happiest he’s been in years. I can’t thank Stonewall Gardens enough for contributing to that.

Literally brought my brother back to life!!!

Several years ago my brother suffered from extremely poor health so I brought him back to Minnesota from San Diego. After a few years, his health improved quite a lot but he was not connecting to anyone in Minnesota. He was lonely more than anything. It is through some divine intervention that we found the Stonewall!!! As soon as [name removed] was able to move to Palm Springs we moved him in. It has been overwhelmingly good for [name removed] and me! I can count on the staff to take care of him. His apartment is cleaned, he is fed according to his special diet and most importantly, [name removed] takes [name removed] to his doctor appointments and to pick up his meds. [Name removed] even gets [name removed] out for social events! I love working with [name removed] and believe he and the staff at the Stonewall make the difference in [name removed]'s life. He’s actually happy again.

I could not be happier!

I think the decision to move to assisted living can be a traumatic one; it was for me when I made it six years ago at the age of 47 due to declining health. We all spend our adult lives trying to gain independence — personal, professional, financial — and even the name “assisted living” seems to contradict that. It can feel like going backward, or worse, failure. Adding insult to injury, the overwhelmingly heterosexual culture of most facilities can feel like a betrayal of a lifetime spent developing a sense of pride and self-esteem as an LGBTQ person. Then four years ago I found Stonewall Gardens and have lived here ever since. Having lived in two facilities now, the “Stonewall difference” boils down to this: once someone has come to the conclusion that they need “help” because of age, illness, or injury, it is not necessary to “hide” one’s true nature — whatever that means (campy, butch, reserved, outrageous, cultured and sophisticated, raunchy and full of stories of your “wild” days) — here. The LGBTQ community is more visible today than ever before, and its need for healthcare and related services must not be a closely guarded secret forcing people to choose between their needs and their hard-won sense of pride in who they are. Stonewall Gardens provides both — pride, and help. When you can no longer live alone, live with your own!

Raves for Stonewall Gardens in Palm Springs

We are so happy to have found Stonewall Gardens. Our family member is starting his 2nd year there and he loves it! The gated facility is beautiful, has great views of Mt San Jacinto, a well-lit wandering path, outdoor seating areas with misters, a water feature and tasteful desert landscaping. The property and facilities are clean and well maintained. Rooms are of appropriate size with large bathrooms that can easily accommodate wheelchairs or walkers. The staff and residents are friendly and very supporting of residents lifestyle preferences. Management encourages and acts upon suggestions from residents. We like the fact that the facility is smaller than most assistant living facilities as it provides more personal attention and our family member's immediate needs are taken care of. Having a smaller resident population also allows for easier social interactions between residents and for friendships to develop. There are many on and off-site activities to keep residents busy and engaged at every mobility level, including movies, picnics, shopping, restaurants, wine and cheese night, piano entertainment, etc. We very much appreciate the scheduling of doctor's appointments so residents can be transported to/from their appointments in the Stonewall van. The facility is just blocks away from Desert Regional Hospital and doctor's offices. We feel comfortable having the staff manage his care while keeping us informed and involved from a distance. We feel welcomed by all when we visit. SM/SB

Consider Stonewall Gardens, Assisted Living

Stonewall Gardens, an assisted living community, has been my home for one year now. I am very happy here. I continue to appreciate the entire staff, from Management to Caregivers. They are spirited and foster a harmonious environment in which they provide support, responsive care and kindness.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are well prepared. The dining room for meals brings the community together three times a day. If I am stuck in my room at mealtime because of disability or sickness, the caregivers bring me my meal, without additional charge.

There are major reasons for an LGBTQ person to consider our community. We are LGBTQ focused. That creates and promotes a special sense of belonging and community. There is not any reason to “come out” again, which I feared was going to happen at mainstream communities. We march/ride in the Palm Springs Pride Parade. Together we go to concerts of the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus. We have outings weekly. For example, in addition to going to the Movies often, recently we picnicked in Joshua Tree National Park, rode the Palm Springs Tram up 8,000 feet in our mountains, and invited candidates seeking election to come speak with us.

Palms Springs is a Gay mecca. Name the activity you enjoy from hiking, sports, live theater and cultural events. There are LGBTQ groups involved in all of these things, and more.

In short, Stonewall Gardens is a gem, providing assistance with needs and encouraging your participation in the populous Gay community and bringing that large community into our space for parties, presentations and networking. If you are an LGBTQ individual thinking about assisted living, please visit us.

I have not been solicited to post this review. My happiness here promotes my review.

Its time reamdy set lets do it

Not one word not one agency not one good intent could in one lifetime achieve whar Stonewall and we accomplishedin our quiet moment. Now lets do it!!!

I never really thought about what my life would be like when I got older. But the ability to be myself in my home and with my family of fellow residents is more fun than I expected. We go out, stay in, talk, joke, and enjoy each other’s company. Having a caring staff close at hand to help me with anything that comes up day or night is a comfort. People make the difference and Stonewall has great people. I would not change a thing.

Simply put... THE BEST!

Any assisted living facility can wow! you with a tour, and Stonewall Gardens will do just that — a stunning Palm Springs Mid-century modern oasis with a breathtaking view of Mt. San Jacinto, immaculately landscaped grounds, and exquisite attention paid to the smallest details of architecture and decor: this is not the “home” you visited grampa in 30 years ago! You may forget this is a care facility and think you’re on vacation at one of the city’s many boutique resorts… pass the sunscreen! :)
But the real test of any assisted living facility is how the staff treats its residents — are you just a warm body filling a room, or a valued member of a community bringing a lifetime of experiences and having a few stories to tell? Adults in need of care (because of age, illness, or injury) are often patronized and belittled for their neediness rather than assisted with their living. At Stonewall Gardens the emphasis is on “living” as full and happy a life as possible; the “assistance” is a means to that end.
Having come from another assisted living facility where I felt like my needs were a burden to those who reluctantly attended to them because that’s what I paid for, where the mindset was “do just enough so he doesn’t complain,” the difference at Stonewall begins with the fundamental respect every staff member has and shows for every resident; it’s like comparing a Volkswagen to a Cadillac.

They did great!

I stayed here for a short respite stay. They did great! I loved them, I will be going back again for another stay. I would rate them very highly and give them a five. I was very happy with them.

A very Palm Spring retirement experience

This place has a very hip and "Palm Springs" ambiance. It is ideally suited for someone who is fairly mobile and looking for a small, stylish place to live. The staff is very professional and friendly.

The rooms are small and not suited to someone who is confined. There are no internal passageways between rooms and dining area, which can be a bit problematic in hot weather but the grounds are beautiful.

While their mission is to provide a safe environment for the LGBT community, they welcome everyone.

The Joys of Stonewall Gardens

Stonewall Garden is a much needed addition to our health care community here in Palm Springs. The community is beautiful, the staff is friendly, and the culturally specific services they provided is addressing the issue(s) for LGBT seniors.

I would recommend going in to meet Lauren and Dee to anyone. They are very knowledgeable and have hearts of gold.

I have been in the industry for over 10 years and I can tell that anyone who decides to make Stonewall Gardens their home will be seen as a family member and not just a "soon number."

Keep up the great work Lauren and Dee, the community is 100% behind you!!

Great place nothing we visited was like this, real Palm Springs feel the place was updated so nice, warm staff.
