Customer Reviews

A very nice place!!

When we went to American house in Westland, no one was there to take us on a tour, but the place was very nice. Everything was clean and appeared to be in good shape.

Nice Tour Overall

My friend and I toured this community for my mother, and her needs. Our tour went well overall, and everyone was nice. The community appeared to be well maintained. Everything looked very nice. The staff was polite, and answered our questions. It was a nice experience overall.

Very Nice Community, My Tour was Nice

I had a good tour of this community. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. The community looked nice and neat. My issue was that the facility was multiple levels, and I wanted a single level community for my father. This is a very nice community with kind people, but it wasn't the one for us.

A tour for care

This was a nice for my husband and myself. The staff were nice and answered our questions.
It did appear that they had activities offered. I was not able to see the menu for the meals. I liked how this community appeared to be clean. Families might look at this community to see if it would be what they were looking for.

Not sure my mom is going to be able to stay here!!!

There have been nothing but inconsistencies since mom moved into American house. There have been issues with the medical team that is contracted by the community. I have not been able to get any resolutions to my concerns. The communication has been terrible between the staff as well as with the family. I still have not heard anything in response to an email I sent last week. There have been numerous issues with the clicker they are given to call for assistance. There has also been mis communication with these as well.

Review of American House Westland Joy Senior Living - Westland, MI

This is a great facility for our Moms needs. She would love the extra activities choir field trips social events. Plus having medical support daily meals a sense of community. We look forward to Mom making the move from her home.

Toured, worth a look!

I toured this community while looking into care options for a loved one. The facility was well kept and clean, and all of the staff I met seemed friendly and professional. We ended up selecting another community, but this is somewhere I would have considered as an option for my loved one.

Sad place to spend your "golden years."

My loved one has been at this American House for 2-1/2 years. Since first moving in the level of care needed has increased for my mom. I do not see the level of care and compassion among the employees as was evident when she first moved in. There is, for the most part, a revolving door for staff. The staff from housekeeping to the kitchen to the medical team are unfriendly at best, and grumpy. I'm pretty sure my mom doesn't get all the care we are paying for. Except for administering drugs, she doesn't get the escort service to meals that we are paying for, nor does she get the service of bathroom help that we are paying for. When I'm there I have never seen the escort service help her to meals or the bathroom. Laundry isn't always done on the scheduled day. There used to be scheduled entertainment at least weekly. Now, rarely. Workers are punching a time clock for a pay check, and the residents are mostly sad and unhappy. This place needs a complete overhaul from cleaning to services offered to the food served, and mostly, the attitude of the employees. There are a few who are kind and friendly, but that should be the rule rather than the exception. For $4000 + a month, I'm very disappointed.

Definitely recommend

The staff is really friendly and they talked me through every step of the process. They take great care of my 97 year old Dad and he really likes them too. The one bedroom apartment is just the right size. And he can have his cat which sealed the deal!

Mixed review

Our family member has been for about 2 years. We have mixed reviews about this facility. The grounds and public areas are very nice. In the Winter the heat does not work that well and the older building is is great need of repairs. Most of the staff is very friendly although I have herd many complaints of some medical staff being very pushy and stern with the residents. The food is O.K. The activities are good even though a new activities director is new and still learning. In general they seemed understaffed. We never see the head of facility or medical staff and when you do, there is never a smile on their face making you feel very uncomfortable. They are not very open to suggestions always stating "it's a corporate policy". Overall, this is a good value for the money as long as your loved one is somewhat independent. Good luck.

The only thing is when she was sick she needed help calling out no one came, they got her the button. The staff tend to be very friendly and nice. You need to monitor things so they know your there. They have alot of social activities keeps mom involved.

Review of American House Westland Joy Senior Living in Westland, MI

Very friendly staff that is enjoyable to work with. Prices are reasonable and don't cause seniors to use their last dollar to live. My two 90 y/o folks really enjoy the site and have repeatedly thanked us for finding A.H.W.J. for them.

Review of American House Westland Joy - Westland, MI

My mom, World War II Veteran, feels right at home here at American House - Westland Joy. She's made many friends in staff and other residents. So many activities always going on, all ages included, never a dull moment. :)

Everything in our community is ADA compatible, so his chair should fit — but the room may have seemed smaller with his chair in it, understandably. We do have other communities that may be a better fit; if you’d like to give me a call, I can discuss your options with you!

Really Bad experience here........

We were really not happy with this facility for my Mother who was in very poor health. It might work for someone who can get around by themselves without a wheelchair or assistance but still the three floors and one small elevator are a problem. Many of the seniors are so bored they just go up and down in the elevator all day! My biggest complaint though was the medical staff, they are totally incompetant when in comes to medical care. If your parent has any special needs like oxygen, regular bood sugar checks or blood pressure checks this is NOT the facility for you!

Each of our communities has different types of care available for residents. Whenever you have any questions about care by the medical staff, I’d love for you to contact me directly so we can get to the bottom of your concerns. My door is always open!

Dependable and Trustworthy

My mom is not able to participate in the activities but what they offer and try to encourage is good. They're very dependable and trustworthy and my mom is doing well there. They're doing a good job.

Location didn't work for us

It was pretty nice. The decision for where we ended up was based on the proximity to the hospital where my friend's doctor has privledges and it just to happened that by luck, there was a community right by it. Unfortunately it was not American House.

I know location plays a big factor in where people choose to make their home, and we completely understand. We’re sorry that American House wasn’t the best fit, but we hope your friend is happy. Should your needs ever change, please don’t hesitate to contact me personally.

Staff is not so friendly

The staff just wasn't as friendly and the other places I visited. The people that lived there were interacting but they didn't look like they were as well cared for or as happy as the other places I saw.

Looks like you may have caught us on a wind-down day! We do so many activities (like trips to Detroit Tigers games) that you may have stopped by after one of our excursions where we’re all recuperating. Please feel free to give me a call and we can schedule another tour for you, where I can personally show you all the benefits of living here.

very nice first impression, wonderful activities director, possibility to do a little gardening, **Baptist Church comes and has a meeting on Monday nights - my dad would like that, three meals a day, sheets and towels washed once a week but residents do their own personal laundry or pay extra/month, a number of benches out front so seniors can sit in the sunshine, nice view of pine trees if you request a room that faces toward the back, independent NOT assisted - if you have a problem wandering you'll be asked to leave

I’m glad your dad would be happy with our church program — and I’m sure we have many of other activities he would also like to participate in!
