Customer Reviews

I'm right at home

I looked at several wonderful communities before choosing Merrill Gardens I felt right at home when I walked in and they let me visit 2 full days to see if it was a good fit for me. They have a weekly town hall meetings to listen to our needs and wants. There are tons of activities daily I have been asked to be on the Library committee, there's dominoes, nightly movies and lots more just so nice to have an independent active lifestyle. They come in weekly to clean and the staff is just so friendly and helpful. The food is great with weekly menus you receive on Sundays. They have a garden that they use for our food and a beautiful rose garden to sit and enjoy. I've made so many friends and would recommend this to anybody.

Take a look

The people we met when we visited this community were nice. The community was clean and it seemed like a good value. I would recommend taking a look at this community

go somewhere else

They forget to give my mother-in-law her meds/not on time & this costs extra. Things we buy her disappear, Several incompetent caregivers (although Maria is really sweet & helpful). Several employees are very difficult to understand. One disappeared while my mother-in-law was passed out, waiting for paramedics. Thank God for the home care nurse that was visiting and discovered her. The prices are ridiculous. Many concerns...

Kitchen staff was very friendly !!

[Removed] the women that gave my loved one and I a tour of the community was absolutely great and was very generous and made sure to follow up with us after we had left to make sure we had found somewhere for my mother to live. The staff in the kitchen was also very helpful and friendly especially [Removed]. She went out of her way to come up to our table during our meal and spend a few moments with us explaining different things about the facility.

Grandma would love this place. It's clean, they have anytime eating from 7-7. Early bird breakfast on the 3rd level. Has a little bit of a 'cleaning product odor'. Many Giants fans which Grandma would love. It's inviting. Includes laundry and if you want to do your own detergent is provided. Puzzle room is beautiful. Priced well.

Friendly Staff, But Not Enough

They have some very friendly people, however, they have too few staff members to offer the services that they charge for and they are not very responsive whenever those services are requested by someone.

Placing a parent here is not recommended

My Dad has lived at Merrill Gardens at Gilroy for 3 + years. Initially, when it was Village Green, we were very pleased with the management and care taken with residents. However, after Merrill Gardens took over, the facility, management, and care given the residents has declined, while the cost continues to rise. My review below is generally not good. However, it does not apply to all work staff and all caregivers. Some do quite well. My overall impression is that this facility is not a warm, caring facility. Rather, it appears to care mostly about profit. The management is currently poor. The manager does not know or show any personal interest in any of the residents. The employees hired (care givers and waiters, housekeepers, etc.) generally have very little of the training that should be required for working with elders who need assistance. If someone falls, they can plan to spend some time on the ground before someone comes to their aid. If someone is sick, it may be hours before the resident nurse (if there is one) checks on them. If they are restricted to their room (in case they are ill), food doesn't show up in a timely manner. The resident may need to call and request food repeatedly before finally getting some. Also, they are then told that they need to pay for the food that is delivered to their room. Initially, laundry once a week was covered in the room price. Now, residents must pay for each load of laundry. The launderers are careless with the laundry. They will wash rugs with delicates. The washing machines are not maintained and are dirty. Weekly room cleaning is included in the price. However, there are some housecleaners that don't even know how to clean a toilet. The food is generally good. However, there are days when the people order food and it never gets to their table. On occasion, residents leave the dining room without their dinners. At night time the staff disappears and if a resident buzzes for help, the call is not always answered. It appears that no one monitors the phones or the doors. Initially, residents were taken to their doctor appointments up to three days a week. That service is now limited to one day a week. Sometimes it is difficult for the residents to get to a doctor. This review is very negative, but the management is negative. Overall, I feel that the staff is under trained, under paid, and just doesn't care about the residents. The corporation seems mainly interested in padding their bottom line at the expense of the residents. Initially, I would have given this facility at least four stars. However, there are many problems that need to be addressed, and competent, friendly management is a must. This is the residents' home and they should be made to feel like it is their home. Merrill Gardens at Gilroy has some work to do! If I was making the decision now in choosing a residence for my parent, I would not choose this facility.

Watch Out Falsely Chargesd

Stated that when they placed there family member in the community, they were falsely told about the covered benefits included in the total cost. They were informed just as papers were to be signed that the loved ones medication was not included and further stated that they were told else wise, and after signed contract they were informed of other "new" cost that now cost them almost 650.00 more a month than their prior estimate. However the family said that was the only bad experience they had, but other than that their experience is good.

friendly

The one thing that I am most concerned about, since my mom is very high functioning I feel that they are not as attentive to her as I wish they were. I do like the staff in general. They are friendly both with the residents and their families. I really like the security of the facility. Overall I am pleased with Village Green.

Wonderful dining service, beautiful building, needs better top level organization

I don't yet have enough experience with them on care services to rate them on this.

I especially like the food. The food is amazing. We go and eat there with Mom, because the food is that good. The dining is open from 7 AM to 7 PM. The kitchen staff remember peoples' names, and do special things for them.

My mother is in independent living but there are other levels of care in the building.

The physical building is excellent. She has a high ceiling. The kitchen has grainte, and a view of the rose garden. You can't hear people upstairs. There are nice paintings on the walls.

This is the best place we looked at, in several states.

There are some gaps at the management level. For instance, there was a switch in cable service to the building. The cable TV was out in the building for a month. They kept giving people dates, like next week, that aren't real. Older people go nuts without TV. It wasn't well organized.

The person who staffs the front desk isn't the most cooperative.

Overall, for the money, this is the best.

Very nice, but not perfect

We moved my 90 year old mother in law to Merrill Gardens in August 2014.

It's a lovely place. Lots of activities. They do pay attention if people do not show up. The food and food service staff is excellent as is the resident handyman. Early steps of moving in were smooth and supported by staff.

There appears to be problems at the management level. Whoever is on main front desk person needs to be better trained to be more helpful and informed. The fact the paid for TV service went out in August and three weeks later is still out, with continually changing timelines for restoration and no explanation for what is happening is frustrating at best. Points to a lack of foresight /organizational planning at higher levels and suggests a lack of concern for resident's experience as a prime priority.

I have had family in other similar facilities in the area as well as out of state. Merrill Gardens would still be my first choice. This is clearly a bottom line focused business first and senior residence second: occasional cracks in the facade of outstanding service can be seen. I worry about the future of the place, as I have seen a constant flow of managers in all previous places we have experience with. On balance, many in house staff do go the extra mile to make sure residents are respected and treated with kindness and personal attention. It always helps to have an outside family member paying attention and keeping track of things.

Review of Village Green Alzheimer's / Memory Care in Gilroy, CA

Full at present & no respite available. Fits her needs. Memory care fully isolated whereas Campbell integrated activities when appropriate. Also considering.

Very worth it

It’s so expensive, but it’s worth – when it’s your mom – it’s important to know that it’s very good care. I’m really happy with them! It’s really great. They offer a lot of fun things! I’m just really happy there. The food is great! We go as guests and it feels like we’re going to a restaurant. It was delicious food.

Very nice place

I'd rate them 5s across the board, I was very impressed with what I saw here when I visited. So far we've been very pleased with the staff and the care that they provide, and the facility itself is well looked after and always clean.

A new home for our friend Frances Hammerlund

Our friend Frances Hammerlund has been deaf since the age of 6. She reads lips, speaks (but is difficult to understand) and is now 92 years old. Up until about 6 months ago she lived by herself in an apartment in Hollister, CA. We met Frances about 12 years ago as we all went to the same Lutheran Church. We became friends with her, being drawn to her wonderful smile and christian positive attitude. After her brother died we became more involved with her as her only close by relative is a sister-in-law who is 83 and not able to drive. We started a few years back taking her to Fremont to a Lutheran Church for the deaf and became friends with the pastor and his wife who also visit Frances on a regular basis (about once a month or every other month). We realized after a fall and later trouble walking that it was not safe for her to live alone so we contacted A place for Mom and started checking out facilities that would be safe for her to live in. We (along with her sister-in-law and Pastor) decided Village Green would be a great place. So we moved her in on Sept. 26, 2013. She has been very pleased and even discovered that two of the waitresses in the restaurant do sign language. We are very happy with Village Green and enjoy visiting there and seeing Frances so content.

Wonderful People in Charge

It's a good facility but they were much more costly. The rooms were tiny and the food was institutional but the staff was superb and the chief people, the directors, that I came in to contact with were terrific. My mother initially decided on this one but then she refused to move there at the last minute, after we had paid the $3000 deposit. Not only was I able to get that back, I didn't even have to beg for it. The man in charge there, he said of course you can have the money back because they wouldn't want my mother to be unhappy. He was just wonderful to deal with.

We really liked this facility. very c...

We really liked this facility. very clean and they have staff that speaks spanish which will be a better fit for our mom.
