The Villa at the Watermark in Southbury CT

The Villa is not for everyone but it is perfect for my mother. It is a very small (14 residents) dementia only place, and the pace is calm with a lot of down time. They do not use the television as a babysitter. It is like a dormitory, with a kitchen and livingroom for all the residents and two halls with seven rooms each. The rooms are small but the residents are not in them very much. They spend most of their time out in the living area. No place is perfect, but the staff at the Watermark/ the villa are continually trying to improve. There are activities, but not constantly. My mother's favorite part is the large front porch with the rocking chairs, she could rock all day long. We feel we have found as good as we can get in a facility for OUR mother.

Amazing place to live!

The Watermark At East Hill is an outstanding place to live!
My Mother moved here and we were worried about the transition as well as her acclimating. She has so much to do and adores all of the friendly and caring staff that she has already recommended a couple friends to move as well.
I cant thank the staff and dedicated care takers for accommodating with Mother. The culture and atmosphere is amazing. It is eminent that the people in the community care and love the residents. The sales people made it a comfortable and easy transition so Mom felt right at home when she moved in. Maintenance has been a delight and is always there when you need something. I highly recommend this facility if you are looking for a loved one or even yourself.

Grounds are beautiful and staff is very friendly. It really is a nice place, however, I do think you need to do more to get the seniors involved in the activities that you arrange. Many of the activities are posted, but are not actually carried out due to lack of participation. Seniors need to know what's going on and need to be persuaded to join the activities. They do need constant reminders as I forget easily. Many times, I have seen that no one shows up to the activities except one or two persons who try to join, but they get discouraged because no one else is there. Please try to get everyone involved. Somehow, you have to encourage the seniors to join the activities and build camaraderie.

Not comfortable

Facilities management is not good. Carpets removed and black vinyl flooring put in its place. Very unattractive. As a matter of fact it is ugly and depressing to look at and live with. And does not seem to be green material since the odor last for weeks. Walls painted in hallways and pictures placed on floor for over a month. Painters left about a month ago. The painters tape is still on the walls. All the residents notice it. Staff walk by daily. Blue painters tape remains. Depressing for residents since it clearly tells us no one cares. I have removed quite a bit of it myself but have stopped. The rent is high. I should not have to do it. Blue painters tape on the walls. All over the place and no one notices? Food is terrible. dried curling piece of fish with canned green beans that are over cooked. Sad place to live. Unreliable work. They start a job and never finish. Maybe the painters tape will be removed if someone reads this. But it should not have to be this way.

As it is impossible to follow up directly on an anonymous post, I encourage you to call or visit me to discuss and tour the numerous recently-completed renovations and upgrades we’ve made that have received overwhelmingly positive reviews by our residents. The blue tape you reference is customarily used by professional painters for marking and trimming during the multi-layer painting process. While you may not see the painters every day in your corridor, they have been on the job without interruption and the interior painting across all of the buildings is scheduled to be completed by the first week in August. We have also installed new carpet throughout the three buildings and I do not understand your reference to a black flooring material. I can assure you that our materials are environmentally sound. Regarding dining, we have comment cards on our dining tables in all 5 dining venues, we have a Dining Committee under our Resident Council that meets with us monthly, we have new and highly qualified individuals serving as Dining Director and Executive Chef, and our overall resident feedback regarding food service has been excellent. Of course we are eager to satisfy your individual preferences and welcome your suggestions and ideas via the Dining Committee and/or comment cards. In closing let me say we are proud to have invested several million dollars in recent improvements to our beautiful community and I would welcome a call from you to discuss any and all concerns you may have. not interested

we have talked to the management. nothing changes. very pretty pictures of the food. no comparison to reality. tasteless meals. lip service is the only service here. remember the sales pitch is simply that. a sales pitch. they will describe things that are incorrect and/or do not happen. management is not interested in honest feedback. despite how they respond to these reviews. we have talked. they were clearly uninterested. very insincere and deflected every single suggestion and critique. they do not accept input despite the pretense . hesitate to believe the sale team when they give you the pitch. do not believe the responses of management to these reviews

Look elsewhere

My parent is bored to death since moving there. The activities are boring, nothing really stimulating. There really is not a social atmosphere here, despite what they tell you. Pictures in the brochure are very misleading. The food is not good and there does not seem to be any indication that it will get better. There were a lot of things described to us when we toured that turned out not to be true. For the amount one has to pay to live here i would say keep looking elsewhere.

We’re committed to resident and family satisfaction I would love to speak with your parents to ensure we are wowing them. We have dozens of classes each semester from music and art, to history, technology and creative pursuits. Perhaps there are clubs here they’d like to join, or fitness programs. Our dining team is open to comments and suggestions and they are proud to ensure that residents have the variety and favorites they crave. Please encourage your parents to fill out dining comment cards or call me any time at [removed] to discuss ways we can make their experience truly extraordinary. Need To Improve The Care They Provide

We are moving my father out of this community due to lack of care. There is room for improvement with the care they provide their dementia residents. The staff they have is trained to provide basic care need for someone. They are not knowledgeable in providing care for someone with dementia. They have nice facility, and they do provide great meals. However they need to improve the care they provide their dementia residents with. They talked a good game in the beginning, but I'am not satisfied with this community.

It is extremely rare that we cannot meet the needs of an individual or family. We take great pride in our associates and caregiving team, which includes the top CNA in the US, as awarded by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. I sincerely apologize that you did not have a positive experience and wish your father and family all the very best. If you would like to discuss further please feel free to call [removed] any time at your convenience. Sincerely, Kelly Mazza, Executive Director

Sweet Staff!!

I have no complaints about how things are going for my mother since she made the move into this community. The staff have all been friendly and made sure to accommodate her needs at the best of there ability. She really enjoys the dinning experience as well as the delicious meals they provide. Overall we are very pleased and would recommend it to anyone.

No assisted living...

From what I saw of the Watermark, it was just fine. The facility was well maintained and the staff seemed very friendly. Our primary concern was that this facility does not have assisted living options for my loved one. Besides this, this looks like a great place!

Thank you for visiting and for sharing your positive feedback. While our assisted living neighborhood is currently full, we do offer Enhanced Living as well. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at any time to come by to discuss that option over lunch or coffee on us. Thanks again. Connie Haworth, Executive Director

From the beginning and throughout our search everyone was extremely helpful here.
We felt that we were very cared for and important to them. All our questions were answered sometimes multiple times. I feel my mother in law will be very happy and very well taken care of here. There is so much she enjoys doing; swimming, exercising and socializing! She will enjoy it all here. She likes good food but doesn’t like to cook so this is the best place for her. She can still keep her independence but will be safe.

Not the right fit!

This community is very nice. We really liked everything about this place. The staff were very helpful and pleasant with us. The community was what we wanted in a community. It just was not the right fit for mom.

Comfortable Living!!

I would have to say that I am very pleased with the quality of care that has been provided to my mother at this community. The staff have all been wonderful to her and have really gave me security that she is being well taken care of and is safe in her new living environment. My family and I have been very happy with everything and would defiantly recommend this facility to anyone.

Friendly Staff And Residents!!

The Watermark at East Hill was a good choice for my loved one and I. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and so are the other residents. We have made many new friends. The community offers a variety of activities, we like to go to the gym 3 times a week. The meals are good, the portions are always different. Sometimes they have very large portions and sometimes not so much. We would recommend this place to a friend because we're happy here so far.

Outstanding facility-previous reviewer couldn't possibly have been here!

Watermark at East Hill. My mom has been a resident for exactly three years. The facility is beautiful, immaculately kept, warm and caring staff. I have been a weekly visitor for all of those three years and have also stayed in overnight apartments on occasion. NOTHING like what the previous review states has ever been seen. Everyone knows my Mom's name, her likes and dislikes. Her apartment is beautiful. The common areas are beautiful. The grounds are beautiful. Take a look for yourself and then be the judge.

So sad for the people living at Watermark in Southbury

Seems that all your reviews are old reviews. I visited this facility in October 2015 to preview for my mom and can tell you it no longer fits your previous reviews. A friend said her aaunt hd gone here in 2011 and it was very nice but she passed away 2 years ago so times have changed!! The facility is very dirty, from the entrance to the elevator, and to an apartment, there are walls with patched or half plastered paint or holes in them and dirty carpeting with stains. There were actually dirty tissues in the hallway on the floor. AND A MOUSETRAP in the hallway!! One can only imagine, sadly, the way the people living there are treated like if this is the physical condition of the facility. I did do a tour with a sales person who told me this was all going to be fixed...BUT I came back by myself, alone, and spoke with 4 seniors who live there and all told me the same thing..the place is a disaster and falling apart and no one listens to their requests to fix things. So sad for these people.

Thank you for taking the time to personally visit our community and also for providing your feedback in this forum. I’m surprised and sorry that you did not have a more positive experience. Our residents give us high marks for quality of housekeeping, maintenance and care, based on our most recent annual (anonymous) survey. Businesses don’t usually get a second chance to make a first impression and I am truly sorry that we let you down. The most important thing is that you and your mom don’t give up looking for the right match for her.

Giving memory care patients a home away from home

Spent the better part of a day here, to tour and experience the environment, see how the current residents respond with different nurses, events, and times of day. I was thoroughly impressed. From the unique family-style concept to the highly individualized care, with lots of personalized attention for each resident...it feels like you're hanging out at your grandma's house, complete with grandpa snoozing on the couch after a delicious lunch (cooked on-site, eaten family-style alongside the nurses - called "Nayas" - who are clearly well-trained and professional, but feel more like friends/companions than nurses). One resident wanted to go outside because it was sunny (it was 32F) - rather than simply telling her, "no, it's too cold," the Naya said it was very cold, then opened the door to the patio and let her go outside for a few minutes, waiting nearby to let her back in when she was ready. End result: The resident felt respected, independent, and safe, rather than rejected, helpless and depressed. One moment made all the difference in her day...and in memory care, isn't that what matters? I'm crossing my fingers we can get Mom moved in!

Brand new, super clean, bri...

Brand new, super clean, bright, well laid-out, feels comfortable...like a family home. Residents are not treated like patients, more like family (eats meals family-style at two large tables, even meds are only given in private room, so there's no feeling of a nursing home). Nurses ('nayas') do everything involved in the care of residents: cook, clean, laundry, etc - extremely patient and loving, physically reassuring (hugs, etc) when residents get agitated. Very welcoming, cozy space. All levels of dementia, so not a lot of group activities...but Nayas work with residents one-on-one, or sometimes in smaller groups. I think Mom would feel safe, comfortable and happy here.

Small Community

The Watermark was set up differently than the place we chose. Where my mom is now they have 4 different neighborhoods, they call it, and basically the patients can go anywhere they want and the aids check on the. This one was set up more like it was one building and the rooms were one room with a bathroom with a door that you close. There were only like 11 rooms. It was smaller, when we were there we really didn't see any activities. Maybe there are but there weren't any when we were there. I don't even remember what the cost was. It was farther away from me than other places so that's why we really didn't look into it further.

Great tour. We are going again today Aug. 14th
