PLEASE READ!

My mother suffered a stroke while living at Shurmer Place in March 2017. I was called five hours after she had blatant signs of mental status change, noted in progress notes, only to find her in the dining room when I arrived. She was responding appropriately but could not speak in full sentences and had visual disturbance. These are signs of stroke. Taking her to dinner was a huge mistake as she could have choked. The director, [Removed], tried to convince me that because she was responding appropriately they felt she was in no immediate danger. This is very bad practice and very poor nursing judgement. I cannot find any evidence that they did anything for my mom after the initial finding. This is heartbreaking and disturbing as my mother lived there for two years and they knew her well. Also know that medical POA has the right to medical records. The elderly population are at increased risk for stroke so make sure staff is knowledgeable of signs and symptoms and know their policy. Staff at Shurmer Place should have notified provider/family at the first sign of altered mental status. One prompt phone call could have changed the outcome for my mom.

Clean, friendly, great atmosphere

Courtesy lacking

I can not review any of the above items. All I can say is that my mother died there after 9 days. I tried to get her medical records from these people. They did not even answer me.

Caring Facility

I don't normally post on these sites, but I wanted anyone who is looking for a facility to feel comfortable choosing Altenheim. My mom was there for rehab and then needed long term care, the staff helped me through the transition. The care she received was great. The facility is clean and there is always activities to keep everyone busy. I would recommend it to my friends.

Great Facility

My mother had been at Altenheim for the past 4 years, I could have not asked for a more caring, compassionate team of caregivers.

Think twice....

I am so disappointed in this facility. My mom was here two years ago, and it is quite different today. It was much better before the senior housing was built. Maybe they are concentrating on that, and not on the skilled nursing rehab center. My mom has had to wait 30 minutes for an aid to come to help her into the bathroom. Her roommate could not hold it and was screamed at for going in the bed. The poor woman kept apologizing for the accident. The AIDS are underpaid and overworked. The Lpns do nothing to help an aid. They will walk out of the room if your loved one has to go to the bathroom and make you wait for an aid to come in. They are completely detached from helping, as if it is below them. This is certainly not what it used to be. It is dirty. Noone clwans under the beds or moves nightstands. Bathroom toilets and sinks do not look like they are cleaned daily. I'm there daily and have watched. They come in and mop the area you walk in;that is all. My mom had dead flowers in a case where the petals were falling all over. I had to ask the cleaner to throw the dead flowers out. One garbage contained in the room for both patients, who are immobile, to use. I am so disappointed in Altenheim and we are looking for a cleaner, more caring facility.

Not safe for loved one.

My mother is at Altenheim, and I am very unhappy with the care she is receiving there. They give her the wrong medicine all the time. They told me that they forgot to update for the new month. If they did, why are they giving her the wrong meds then? Most of the staff there are sneaky, when you ask a question, they look down and stammer their words. We picked Altenheim because they were rated high. If this is the best nursing home in ohio, I fell sad for all the other old people in regular nursing homes, because this one " Altenheim" is pathetic. We are looking for another nursing home for her now. Please everyone, don't pick a home for your cherished loved one by the ratings.

I spent a little time w/ the director, and it seemed OK. I think the nursing home and assisted living are separated by air; not great if one parent is in each.
