Only If Can Self-Advocate

My mom stayed at Las Palmas for about a month in spring [Removed]. Unless you are able to advocate for someone staying there, or the resident can vocally advocate for themselves, I highly recommend AGAINST Las Palmas as an assisted living community. [Removed] in Sales was very helpful in getting our mom in and helping us with furniture via phone and email - Really wonderful in a terrible and stressful time. But once inside the facility the experience was quite poor.

While the care givers we met were very kind, there were far too few. The promise was with the push of a button my mom would receive care in 10-15 mins. Sometimes my mom would wait for an hour. Also, when visiting her we could smell her and went to inquire about if her weekly shower had happened. They had to look it up and realized it had somehow been missed. But they couldn't explain why.

In addition, while we were there their button service had been experiencing difficulties. For residents that can walk to the front desk this is not a big deal. However my mom was transitioning to a wheelchair and she HAD to push the button to do anything like go to the bathroom. My sister and i had to alert the desk her button wasn't working 3 times. That means even though they were aware the system was having difficulty they didn't put anything else in place (maybe a walkie talkie or having someone check on her more regularly) for a very vulnerable resident. Mind you we paid for the services she needed because your cost is based on need. But they didn't live up to the services we were paying for.

Also no one in management knew our mom by name. The care givers did. In all the time we'd visit we never once saw a manager in the hallways - not the Exec Director, no Asst Directors, not Sales, no one. I was told I passed the Activities Director once, but she hadn't identified herself and had nothing showing she worked there. One day I needed to drop off a payment check. Front desk reception told me to knock on the door of the Finance person. When I did she was clearly bothered. She told me I should just leave checks in the box. I asked her why we never saw management. Why doors were always closed. She waved this complaint away saying she was doing pay roll. I asked her if she even knew who my mother was. And she looked at me blankly.

One positive is that the food seemed to be celebrated by the residents. Apparently there was a new chef and they loved the food.

So again if it is someone that can self-advocate and looking for more of a retirement community seems could be OK (hence two stars, not one).

But if you need to trust the care of a loved one to a place, and you want them to be known and loved - this is not the place. We now have our mom in a facility in WA state. I am not sure if the regulations are different as we didn't try any place else in CA, but it is night and day. The staff all know our mom. They are invested in her happiness and health. They all know us. It feels like we are a team all working together. We know if we don't come in they have her best interests at heart. If you are reading this, good luck! It is a tough time.

HAD MOM HERE AND MOVED OUT

My mom was in Memory Care Unit and we pulled her out after a few months. BEWARE - this PLACE OVERSELLS and DOES NOT DELIVER quality care for elderly. It is tremendously understaffed, poorly managed and they make major mistakes. We got sold a lot of marketing and little real service. So disappointed with Las Palmas whose staff made mistakes with medications several times. They did not have enough people working to care for how ill the residents are so we moved out FAST --and so did many others.

Disappointed - over promised UNDER delivered

Lots of promises but for the first few months they have not lived up to most of them. Disappointed because this is very expensive when you parent is not getting the care they say they will get.

They’re fantastic.

They’re fantastic. The m/ f ration is higher than most. There are more males than other establishments. So for those residents that function better in a higher m to f ratio, this would be a good community to consider. For veterans of WWII or any other war, it’s a great place for them. They are very well received and respected there.

Review of Las Palmas Senior Living for my Mother by her daughter

My Mother who is 89 years old moved into Las Palmas from a Skilled Nursing Facility three weeks ago. She had a fall at her home five weeks earlier and was no longer able to live by herself. It is such a comfort for me and the family to know she is being assisted in a safe environment. It has been an adjustment for her after being independent for the 10 years since her husband passed away, but Las Palmas has made it a good experience for her. The first week was a challenge as she adjusted to the change, but because of the friendliness and great care from the staff of Las Palmas she is doing well and happy. She is enjoying not having to shop for her own food, cook, and clean-up and finds the food in the dining room very good. She especially enjoys the social interaction that she didn't have living by herself. Thank you Las Palmas and A Place for Mom!

Dad Is Happy

I have to go by my dad's satisfaction of the place. Once he got settled in he is giving it a 5! I've not seen him this happy in a long time. It took him a little while to setting in but it's really great now. He's pretty outgoing and pretty social so he likes all the activities they have there. They have a social happy hour everyday, Monday through Friday. They've got the typical rest of the amenities and entertainment that other places had too. They've treated him well and he's very very happy with all the resources there. He had a couple issues when her first got there with adjusting and changing his meds and they were great with him. They weren't afraid to call him out on a few things which helped us a lot. My brother and I appreciated that - that was what they should have done.

Another thing liked was the woman who I was talking to there was very frank. She would say regardless of where you go, in general, here's what I strongly suggest. It's all kind of a sales pitch - I realize that - but it was very helpful.

The location was great too because it's basically right outside the gate of my dad's old leisure world community so it's easy for his friends to stay in touch.

Excellent Senior Living Facility

As a current resident, what I like most about Las Palmas is the entire facility, the ambiance of the facility, the staff, the service that they provide, the grounds in which they're located and the resources they provide including enclosed patio with pool. It's much like a garden apartment complex. The dining area is very comfortable. The architecture there is very welcoming. It's a little bit like a theme restaurant and the food so far in the several weeks we've been here has been excellent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner have been more than quite satisfactory. The only thing that's missing is a bottle of wine with dinne

They know what their doing

It is an older community but it is very well maintained. They said they do deep cleaning every quarter but we haven't been here long enough to see it happen. My loved one likes the food a lot. The only thing I could say might be a negative is that when occasionally the food is not served at the right temperatures. Overall it's well maintained community that takes good care of the residents. They also offer a good level of activities for the residents. So far it has been going good. The cost of the community was better then other communities we looked at. They are a good caring community that knows what they are doing. Just seems like they have their act together.

Good Activities and Food

It's been really great. My aunt has been there for a week and a half. From what I have seen, the care is good. They do a lot of music, art, movies, shopping trips, happy hours, coffee and news in the morning and all kinds of games. My aunt likes it. She really likes the food. She said everything she's had has been really good. I visited 4 places and this was the best for my aunt's needs.

Bright, light, and spacious apartments

I really liked the bright and light, spacious apartments at Las Palmas. The dining here is excellent. The staff's kindness during the process of choosing a place for my loved one was extraordinary. There have just some inconsistencies in what I was told about transportation and activities. I was told that they had excellent transportation, but I have not seen it yet, and some residents seem bored or lonely due to the lack of daily activities. I hope to see more staff and resident interactions and activities in the future when I visit my loved one.

This place seems to suit our families needs the best. When Dad needs more care because of the Alzheimer's they can meet his needs. Also, beautiful setting, lots of activities, etc. Friendly, could relate to my stories and needs of my Mom and Dad. The Director has a good take on her residents. In all 3 places I liked how they greeted residents by firsts name and knew their background, shared it with me. And they all have lots of residents to get to know!
