Mother, [name removed] was in bloom's care for 6 years (3 in memory care). She could not have have asked for better caregivers, especially in memory care. They genuinely cared for and loved her. Along with hospice, they were with [name removed] comforting her when she died. Good mo finding a better community reasonable costs also.

The entire team has lost a gem that was able to bring smiles to many of the faces she encountered. Thank you for your gracious volunteer time at our community. Eric Fennell

Local Representative

We aim to please...it is not just our residents who we have an opportunity to impact, but we also serve our families as well.

Review of Bloom at Belfair - Bluffton, SC

Poor management communication. Low staff to patient ratio. Most of staff good. But some sit around on their phones and don’t help residents like they should. Noisy, too many alarms going off. When they do it takes a long time to shut them down. Lost many items of clothing and personal items in laundry or other patient’s rooms. Not much cooperation in getting them returned.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

Sorry we could not meet your expectations after significant attempts, Jay. Hopefully you have found those expectations met at the new setting. We wish you and your wife the absolute very best.

Review of Bloom at Belfair - Bluffton, SC

The community is beautiful and always immaculate.
Christians decorations gorgeous which the residents love to show off.

Great Place

My mom is doing well in the Memory care, they make sure that she gets to be with the other residents on the main floor where she can visit and she goes to the dining room with them as well. They have a beautiful secured courtyard that she enjoys using as well. The staff here are so good with her, attentive and caring.

Right now they are in Georgia due to the storms but they have a facebook page for the family members to follow and we know our loved ones are safe.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

Your observations and kudos are much appreciated. We did not want to evacuate for the second time in a year, but our resident safety is paramount to all we do. Your mother is doing beautifully in this transition and we will help in any way we can.

Amazing Care

Bloom at Belfair has exceeded my expectations. The quality of care is excellent and their ability to meet the needs of their residents is amazing

I found the community to be clean, free of odors, and very inviting. The executive director was informative and considerate to all staff and residents we encountered staff were all pleasant and busy caring for residents.
I also liked the variety of apartments giving the resident multiple living choices overall, a great choice for those seeking senior living.

Our team appreciates your visit to our community and the observations you have shared. If you haven't, we hope you will chose our community if and when the timing is right. Again, thank you!

Caring staff and management

Bloom at Belfair's staff has been great to my mother. This living facility is so clean and inviting. They have a lot of activities for my 87 year old mother. She is now in Memory care but when she lived in the independent living they made arrangements for her to live out one of her dreams! They arranged for her to go skydiving! She had such a good time! Now that she is in memory care, [Removed] has been exceptional. If I ever need a question answered he is available! Thank you Bloom at Belfair for taking good care of my mother's needs.

Eric Fennell

Bloom sucks

This community was the worst community i have ever been to. I had booked a week of respite for my mom there in Bluffton, sc so i could still work and didn't have to worry about finding caregivers, which at this point was becoming impossible. From the moment i left her, i worried. It is a memory care unit, which yes my mom has some dementia, but not alzheimer. She is aware of her surroundings and what's going on. Within the first hour of us arriving, i was in my mom's room putting my mom's clothes away, when a resident came into my mom's room, intro her bathroom, took a nasty crap in her toilet, used her bedsocks that i had temporarily laid by the sink, to wipe herself with, then finished spoof her crap field hands in the clean, white towel that i had just hung up, and i think she had also crapped in the sink? Because i found little yurds in her sink. Then, when i had come back in again, to find out what was taking her, so long, i had let the lady do her business, she was trying to flush the toilet with the water knob on the floor behind the toilet, and was using my mom's wipes to clean up around the sink, and was moving things, all around her sink. I couldn't get her to leave. I had to call the, administrator, and he in turn sent some cna down to retrieve her. And she had a hard time with get and didn't seem that nice to her either. That was just the first hour. Then they did put mom to bed, all early because i was there, i was going to help out, and wanted to see how they were going to handle her getting her in this high bed. It took 2 of them to kind of lift her into it, mom dating ow the whole time and dating they hurt her legs. I was so concerned on leaving when i went to work, that i called back to have them check on her, that she will attempt to get out of bed and gal on that hard floor. They said they got her up. Lowered the bed, by taking the box spring off, and putting the mat down. The next morning, when i got there, apt 0900am, due to traffic, mom was up, she had her oatmeal breakfast and needs, she looked ok, she hasn't had a shower or anything, maybe a bed or chair bath, which is OK was only the first day. She was happy to see me. They were about to do some chair exercise activity, great. My mom needs, exercise. Yet, the girl doing them, didn't really seem to care if these people did them or not. I was trying to get mom to participate more than she was. That didn't last long. She passed out some crossword puzzle sheets for the residents to do. I can't even do crosswords puzzles, i knie mom s not. After she passed them us, she walked away. I did some work paperwork while sitting next to mom, and having a cookie i brought for us. Then i got, an important phone call, from overseas. I went into one if they're little game rooms for a little privacy, mom was, wheeling around in her wheelchair scoping the place out, ťrying to find a way out. While i was talking, i had one of the LPN nurses come to me, telling me that they are wanting to send mom to the hospital, because they think she s having trouble breathing, and she s wheezing. I got off the phone. Went to where they were checking her out, she seemed fine to me. Aktie raspy due to excess phlegm she gets from all the pollen in the air, which the Dr. Prescribed mucked for a needed. They said she hasn't gotten any yet, because it was as needed. They were checking her vitals, all seemed fine except her O2 was at only 88%, , yet they never attempted to check it again. I'm not a dr. But I've noticed with these finger O2 CHECKERS, sometimes you have to leave it on the finger for a bit too get a good reading, they hardly had it on her for a minute. But, who am i, I'm not a nurse. They also said that her congestion sounded like it was in her chest/lungs. I didn't think it appeared to be, but who am i, im not a nurse or Dr. They wanted to call the ambulance, but i said, no she really doesn't like ambulances, I'll just take het n her car, which she lives driving in, and also she will be more comfortable sitting up is better for her than laying diem in an ambulance, esp. If she did have any aspiration. I, asked which is the closest and best Hospital. They told me Coastal, right up 278. Got her in the car and started heading there, which wasn't that close. On the way, mom said she had to go to the bathroom, so i stopped at a Wendy's on way, because i know hospitals are not always that receptive to letting old people use their restrooms. She had a good bm, got her back in the car, and she felt better. Found the hospital, which was all the way out by I95, got her checked in at emergency, they took her vitals at check in already, and they were all great, including her O2 being 96%. But she s there now they got to check her out. They couldn't find anything wrong, except i noticed she seemed allotment dehydrated, she was thirsty, i got her done, ice t, and then she could finally pee, [Removed] Don't these facilities know that geriatric patients need to be given something to drink all the time, because they dehydrate easily. While she was in that hospital bed, i began to think about getting get back home. The whole idea of checking her in to an assisted living was keeping her out of a Hospital, and here she v is in one after only v one night! I called blooms administrator, [Removed], tools hit the situation, and thought about taking her home, and also wanted to make sure that i would get a refund, i had paid $1400 for 7 days. And she only stayed 1 night, he hemmed and hawed and said that wasn't his call. He wounds have to check with the hire ups. Well, okay i said, when will you know? He, says not today, it's already 400. Well, i said, she s all in the hospital, let me see when they're going to release her, if it's going to be overnight or much longer, maybe she ll stay another night, or if they keep hey overnight, I'll come by to pick up her stuff. They ended up releasing her at 500 pm. Since it was kinda late to have to drive her all the way home to Lexington, sc (3hour drive), i may add, we'll bring her back to the place and give them another chance, and thereby i can see again how their date is with her tonight, I had already had to get the night off from work, but I could do the morning run. I got there, caked them to let them know I'm on my way back with her, and they said they had packed up her stuff, they didn't think she, was coming back? I said i didn't know. Well, they agreed she can still stay here, but when i said i will stay with her for the night, they told me NO. We do not allow any family members to stay, unless they're checked in a resident too. I could not believe that. She is my mother. I don't know how many times i have spent the night in other facilities next to her in a recliner or sometimes just a chair, but they never kicked me out? I just couldn't believe that. Then the final straw, when i got there, and i was going to need a little help getting her out of the car, they wouldn't help me, because mom didn't want to go back in there. Well, i can't say i blame her. After all this, it is probably better i take her home. 3 hours later, we arrived safely at home, and she was so happy to be home. She slept like a baby.

It is unfortunate that we could not meet your expectations or desires on any level. I personally made every attempt to accommodate your requests within the confines of the state regulations, as did my team. We hope you have found the level of care you are searching for for your mother, as she was a wonderful lady in the short time I was able to know her. We wish you and her the very best of luck.

We were well received on our tour as we looked for our mother/mother-in-law. We liked the one bedroom apartment with it's outside view and the price seemed reasonable. We would need to carefully calculate add-ons, however. Outside furnishings were a bit worn. But I don't think that would matter to her if she had an area to do some gardening. We would consider this facility if we bring our loved one to this area. The apple-pie gift for visiting was a nice touch and very tasty.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

Thank you for recognizing the value in our community. We do hope, when the time is right, you will move your mother/mother-in-law into our community. We do have plans to address our outdoor furniture, so hopefully during your next visit to our community you will see the enhancement to our outdoor furniture and space. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the apple pie. Our pastry chef does an amazing job!

As in all facilities like this the bottom line is a factor and hinders paying or hiring enough staff and preparing and serving quality foods. It’s the problem with all for profit businesses. You always have staff that cares and works hard and staff that would rather sit and do nothing also communication is very lacking.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

As the Executive Director, your concerns are important to me and I would like to address all that you may have. This review was listed anonymously so I do not have a point of reference to attempt to address these concerns. If you do see this response, please take an opportunity to reach out to me either by a personal meeting, telephone call, or email. I do have an open door policy and expect all of my managers to accommodate this philosophy as well. We are here to meet our resident's and family's needs and would like the opportunity to do this for you.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

Thank you very much for your feedback. We appreciate it and will continue to care for your wife to the best of our ability.

We have had a very good experience, so far. It is very clean and neat. Like all places needs some casual furniture inside and out. So good to get outside make sure enough staff is on duty especially on the memory unit. There is always room for improvement.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

We will look into purchasing indoor and outdoor furniture. In addition to this, we are currently researching replacement cushions for our existing furniture, both inside and out of the community. We thank you for the feedback. We also believe that there is always room for improvement and look to our residents, families, and staff to help guide us, so everyone's feedback is valued and appreciated.

Much improvement in the care of their residents.

I am very pleased with the care my wife is getting. Bloom has a very caring staff that not only cares for [Removed] but they go out of their way to answer all questions. Even I ask some dumb stuff. It’s no fun to leave [Removed] in a home but I’m content knowing how well she get along with the staff.

I like coming to work in this facility. The staff are very nice. The building is clean and organized. Very respectful people there. The residents are well taken care. Very nice community.

Coming from another medical professional, we absolutely appreciate your input, observations, and positive experience. We don't often receive other professional perspectives on our community and the things we do each day to care for our residents, so thank you very much!

Excellent community, very senior citizen oriented, multiple extracurricular activities to perform. Would recommend highly

Coming from one of the physicians that cares for our residents and visits our community each week, this feedback is tremendous. Thank you very much, Dr. Rosello. Your input and service is absolutely valued!

Great staff! Nice community. My mother is very happy living here.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. Caring for your mother is an honor that our team takes very seriously.

It is one that makes a good attempt to cater to the many different types of people. Some who think their way is only way. I feel complete happy here.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

We do try to meet the needs, likes, and dislikes of all of our residents. It sounds as if we are living up to your expectations. We are certainly ecstatic that you are "completely happy here."

We like it!

The staff has been doing a good job with everything. I would have to say that the food is 50/50. My mother in law has been doing daily things to stay active. The community is always clean and neat when we visit.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

We appreciate the feedback and kind words. We are constantly working on the dining experience and continuously solicit the input and feedback of our residents both on a daily basis in the dining room and monthly with our Chef Chat meetings. All of our management team is expected to have an open door policy and we welcome feedback to continuously improve. Our goal is to strive to meet our residents expectations.

A Wonderful Place

My mother is in Bloom at Belfair. The personnel is extremely competent and extremely friendly. They have made my mother feel right at home. During the evacuation for the Hurricane Matthew they did an unbelievable job transporting the residents to safety and during the entire stay they made this time so much fun for all. My mom said it was a great vacation. We moved from out of state and it was a difficult adjustment for my mom. In a short time they have welcomed her and she likes it there better than her previous place in Maryland.
Thank you so much The Bloom at Belfair.

What a fantastic success story! This is exactly why we do the things we do each day to care for the residents who live with us. Compassionate care from passionate professionals!

Harlan has been there less than a week so he's still adjusting. I couldn't be happier with his care a the "hotel" (his words). All of the staff are professional and caring. The whole area is very clean and inviting.

My only disappointment is the food. It's delivered to the memory unit from the kitchen. Our first meal was cold, not luke warm, but cold. Other meals have been barely warm and not very appetizing.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

Thank you so much for the feedback. We are constantly working on the dining experience as a whole. I will personally look into the food temperature issue and the plating of the meals as they are delivered to the table. We will work on correcting both.

I was very impressed with the professionalism of the staff, spaciousness of the Memory Care area, engaging and friendly atmosphere and scheduled activities for the clientele. The facility and gardens were well maintained and inviting. Because of it's size it was able to integrate all levels of those suffering the ravages of dementia/Alzehemers while maintaining a high level of personal attention to detail in programming to suit individual wants and needs .

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

We appreciate your observations and your kind words. We do make every attempt to individualize the care that we deliver to our residents. We take this aspect of what we do very seriously and continuously strive to meet our resident's needs, likes, and dislikes. Thank you so much for your input, it is very much appreciated.

Not what it says

Ridiculously high turnover - Director is non-responsive. Building was once THE place for Alzheimer's care but now it is just a space. Pictures are of when first manager was there and she left a long time ago. Recently fined by EEOC for discrimination of staff and that says it all about how this family operates. Moved mom out last month and have never been happier with new facility

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

As the new Executive Director, I do apologize for any care that did not meet your expectations under the previous management and staff. We have a tremendous team of compassionate caregivers and ancillary support staff that serve our residents with great passion. I am happy to hear that your mother has received the care you would expect in her current setting and am disappointed that our community did not meet your needs at the time she lived at Bloom at Belfair. I can assure you that we are a completely different company and community that delivers quality care, services, and programs. I do invite you back to our community to see some of the positive things we are accomplishing for our residents each day.

They have activities every day for my Mother and this is what she needs with dementia. The food is wonderful and she is gaining all her weight back. The staff is very friendly and helpful and it is very clean there. I am very pleased to know my loved one has a nice place to live and can get the interaction she needs.

Thank you very much for the kind words. We are very pleased that this was a success story whereby we met your mother's needs and your expectations. We do take the care of our residents very seriously and want to meet their needs, wants, and desires, while meeting everyone's expectations. Thank you again for your positive feedback.

The reviews I read did not do justice. I almost did not tour, and now I have my mother here. We are very pleased with all the help that we received.

Eric Fennell

Local Representative

Thank you so much for the confidence in moving your mother into our community.

I am extremely disappointed and gravely concerned for my grandmother's health and wellbeing at Bloom. Things have gone down hill since management changed from Riverside to Bloom. For the third time in the past year her medications have been [removed]. She ends up in crippling pain and nothing is done about it until someone from our family is present. Luckily we are able to go over there almost everyday. I don't feel safe with her in their care without this level of vigilant monitoring. Neither the management nor the contracted health aide company have been responsive. We will be moving my grandmother as soon as possible.

As the new Executive Director of Bloom at Belfair, I would like to apologize for any care that did not meet your expectations under previous management and leadership. I can assure you that Bloom at Belfair has a tremendous team of compassionate caregivers that deliver fantastic care to our residents and support staff that provide the infrastructure for our caregivers to focus on delivering quality care. I do invite you back to our community to meet some of the special, compassionate team that deliver such personalized care including our licensed nurses.

Helpful And Responsive

Overall organization is very helpful and responsive. Little confusion with clothes getting hung up upon admission. Administration needs some organization and this was the best one of three facilities looked at. The value is above all with care and staff is very experienced. Numerous activities that patient can join.

We are so pleased that your experience has been a positive one. I will work on communication and organization to ensure that we emulate clarity when working with our residents, families, and guests. Thank you for your feedback and review.

Look Elsewhere

This facility is terrible, under staffed, no communication, no follow through. You can email or talk to the Director but don't expect to get a response despite his instance that you contact him.

It is not clean and the staff is grossly under trained for the task at hand.

I am sorry that the experience that you had did not meet your expectations. I can assure you as the new director that I take all concerns of our residents, families, and staff very seriously and do what I can to correct any issues that may arise. We have a full housekeeping staff on board and they do a fantastic job keeping our community neat, clean, and orderly in order for our residents to have a safe environment. Since this comment/review was posted, we have implemented very specific training for our staff that affords them the knowledge and skills to more-than adequately care for our residents.

Nightmare at Belfair

My father was here for one year, during that time he moved to the memory care unit. The aides are lazy and lack supervision, the institution as a whole is ill-equipped for non-ambulatory patients and dementia patients. My father is in a chair and also has dementia, he had multiple falls; some of those went unreported to me and often no incident report was made. After the falls I requested they instituted fall hazard methods with him and nothing happened. Also have a lack of activities with him, as he sits in the same spot every time I come there.Management says they do more than industry standard which doesn't say much for the industry on a whole. Little extras they do look good on paper but not when you read the fine print; nor are they executed well. Keep in mind that you will be paying in excess of $4000 per MONTH. This facility should be inspected regularly by family and gov. It looks pretty but its the care of the residence that counts. He is now at the VA Nursing Home and is healthier and getting the extra attention that he needs for 1/3 the cost.

No bang for your buck

Sadly no activities in memory care recently. It's quite sad...the care is not perfect nor is it anywhere. I think the staff is kind. But things are lost, so much down time.

Your concerns above have been addressed and our memory care program is very inviting, vibrant, bustling with activity and we are always looking to improve what is not perfect. I invite you to re-visit our community and ask for the Executive Director if you do return. Thank you for your honest opinion. It helps us to improve.

We weren't there that long, just a co...

We weren't there that long, just a couple of weeks. While we were there everything was fine. I don't have any complaints. I don't think there is anything to improve or be concerned about. It's a good place.

A good Place Overall

My mother is at Bloom at Belfair for about a month and a half. The facility is very well appointed and the staff and residents are very friendly, and there are many activities.

On the negative side, you should know that the floor plans as provided prior to renting are not as indicated, for example the apartment we rented was shown as 460 sq ft, in actuality it is only 315. In addition, the brochure indicates that wifi is available and when asked we were told it would reach into the apartments, in actuality it does not and requires an addition payment of $80/month to the local phone company to bring broadband into the apartment. This is a significant expense for someone on a tight budget such as my mother. It is particularly annoying given that these are items that were considered in choosing between several places.

Thank you for your feedback. These observations will most definitely help us improve how we operate our community.

The people are fabulous.

I am not thrilled with the activities. 85% of the activities are aimed at women, which I wish they had activities that included woodworking, listening to lectures, visits to the air force base. I’ve had the food a couple of times and I thought it was okay, but my loved one wishes it were different. The people are fabulous. The therapists are very good. They’re very attentive. My loved one loves it.

Awful food ice cold

The food is awful and cold.I feel like my grandmother is living in Martha Steward federal prison cell! The room are cold in the winter and steaming hot in the summer. No one seems to care if she comes out of her room a eats. We found her last weekend outside in 35 degree weather with one sweater, no bra and one shoe. There is answer from the man running this place. He told us he would investigate and get back to us.

Don't be fooled by the beautiful looks of the building nor the cleaness

Don't be fooled by the beautiful looks of the building nor the cleaness of Bloom at Belfair. This facility change management at the end of last year (2013). However since October the care sucks, the two nurse (LPN) over there don't know what do, or how to run a assisted living facility. They never have a answer to any question and get lost after you asked them. Care staff is very rude , everyone does what they want to do. I think the money for rent is over the hill for the type of care being offered. The Food is awful and they served my family leftovers from Sunday Lunch. I can hear staff talking about the patients eat on the weekends. Jeff the head person in charge over there has a don't care attitude when it comes to complaints. Think twice before dropping them off over there!

Where I want to be put when the time comes!

I found Belfair Gardens a beautiful almost fairytale step back in time to the youthful years of my father. The staff is some of the most alive, vibrant and creative that I have ever met. Although my father's condition dramatically worsened preventing him from remaining at that facility, I hope that one day I might be put in such a wonderland of stimulation and joy as I found there. If you were looking for a locked ward as my father needed, this facility has a true secure set up that left me knowing with confidence that he was there and safe without question. I wish he had been able to enjoy a longer time there before his condition made him in need of a different facility but I strongly and highly recommend it.

Brand New

I was a brand new facility and it was lovely but I decided to choose a community where I already knew people who live there.

From the Community

Since 1965, our goal has been simple yet aspirational: to help our residents flourish. Entering a Bloom community does not mean checking your lifestyle or personality at the door. Residents continue to live life to its fullest potential, enjoying their favorite activities while discovering new ones, and blooming into their best selves through growth and discovery.
Bloom's memory care has the distinct honor of receiving a perfect rating and "Deficiency Free Survey" from the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control. The program is uniquely designed featuring interactive neighborhoods situated around Town Square with working "Life Skills Stores” (i.e general store, old-fashioned ice cream parlor, book nook, art center, hobby shop, post office, barber shop, news stand, toy store, candy shop and vintage sporting goods store). Open to residents 24 hours a day, Town Square represents Main Street America reminiscent of the early 1940's developed to bring back long-term memories and ensure residents relate to familiar settings from their yesteryear. Main Street opens into outdoor courtyards complete with putting greens, dog parks and shuffleboard courts.
Bloom's personalized service and superior care enable residents to enjoy the privacy of home, combined with the security and convenience of assistance and a maintenance-free environment.
