Customer Reviews

My father has been at Sunnycrest for 7 months now. Moved from Montclair. There has been a lot of employee changes so Activity dir is very busy. She also has to drive the bus Tues and Thursday s for doc appts. Food is average. Chef changes as well. Very busy community. Prices are 2800 up. My dad is 3200 but always an increase yearly. Maintenance man is over work so if you need something fixed put your name on the list . Terrible internet signal . He has several friends but their activities could improve for more trips. Parking is terrible for community. It is nice that st. Jude is closed but a very busy area during the week.

Assisted living in disguise

These reviews are old. Currently, as of [date removed]. This place has gone downhill. It is under new management for a little over a year now. The new staff are all young and incompetent. The prices have gone up, not down. They charge for everything and deliver very little. The meals are not specific to each residents dietary requirements. This place at one time was a very nice place for a loved one. now it's a great place to dump someone you cannot stand. This place need to be sold to someone who cares about people and not just making money. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find a place with a staff that will take care of your special someone. Be very diligent and get all the information before settling into this place. Be warned.

The facility is very open and light

This place is wonderful. The facility is very light and open with bigger hallways and a bigger courtyard, which really works for my Mom. Her room is nice and big with lots of windows in it. The staff has been very patient with her and I really appreciate the calmness that they have. The building is kept very clean and housekeeping comes by her room once a week to clean. A lot of the walking areas are level for when my Mom wants to take a walk and the sidewalks are a bit away from the main streets so it isn’t too busy. They offer a few different activities like bocce ball, games, bingo, and lots of entertainment. They also offer outings off campus and to the store. This place has been great and I would recommend them.

Respite care

My mother-in-law was in this community for respite care for about 6 weeks. We were very happy with them. The staff was nice and attended to her needs. The food was excellent and she loved it. It was always clean and very nice. Everyone was coherent here as well and it makes things easier. I would recommend this community.

Care for family

We toured this community for my father's care. We did not like that it was the older community. The community. seemed outdated, We were informed that the meals need some improvements. We saw that the community had activities for the residents. We would suggest that families tour this community for the care of a loved one.

Very updated!

The community at Sunnycrest Senior Living is a wonderful place. The community is very well kept and clean throughout. It is nicely updated, welcoming and bright. The staff that offered the tour were very friendly and were able to address all of my questions.

This facility was once beautiful because it was full of life and bustling activity. In the last 6 months it was sold to a company that owns multiple facilities and is located out of state. The decline has been rapid. The previous review was right. It is simply a shell with nothing left of what it used to be. We have a family member there and have for a long time. It was an awesome place in the past--the owner's personal touch was in everything. Now there is nothing left. It is a sad, depressing place. The coffee machine is often empty, there's never snacks out for residents, there's no coordinated activity. It's just depressing.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know how we’re doing at Sunnycrest. We’re sorry to hear that you feel like the community is not what it used to be. Having recently taken over management of this property, Leisure Care is committed to doing the right thing for our residents.

It saddens us to hear that you think the community has lost the personal touch, and we will do our best to bring this back. Please know that our staff is focused on making the residents feel welcome and loved in their home. We have also made it a priority to keep the coffee machine filled and the snack area stocked – we know this is important to our residents.

We are always aiming to improve our services and would welcome a conversation with you about your experience if you’re interested. Please feel free to reach out to our General Manager if you would like to discuss this further.

I am very disappointed. I find it depressing with little participation by the residents. I understand the food is poor.

Younger attendents seem helpful and pleasant but others seem indifferent. The sales manager who influenced our decision is no longer there.

Nice facility

Sunnycrest is a very nice facility. It is always kept clean and maintained well. It does has a comfortable feel when you walk in. The staff is always very friendly and attentive. The level of care is pretty good and the food is actually decent here.

Mixed experience

Our experience with Sunnycrest Senior Living has been somewhat mixed. The people here are friendly, but the care and services aren't quite what we were hoping. My loved one has had some maintenance issues that they've been a little slow in resolving.

good choice

Sunnycrest Senior Living is kept very clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful. All of these places are very expensive. I think the value is about average. I think it is really a nice place. It is dated but they are painting it now. I wish there was more parking but I don't think there is anything they can do about it. It is really safe and nice. I really like Sunnycrest, I think it was a good choice.

Thank You!

Once again, thanks to you and the staff. You made olive’s life as easy as possible by doing those extra things to keep her happy and comfortable.

Thank you Sunnycrest Senior Living!

You are a godsend. All that you are and all that you do for your residents is very much appreciated by me as well as my family. We were so worried about my grandfather, but after seeing him at Sunnycrest and seeing hime so happy really is a huge relief. You are a blessing!

The only community that didn't look like a dump.

Big Thanks From Our Family

Thank you for all your help in our journey the last two years. You and your staff helped us more than you know in dealing with the ups and downs of our mother's care. If a situation arose where we had many different options, you and your staff were always available to listen and help guide us. Sunnycrest Senior Living is truly Sunnycrest "Assisted" Senior Living.

Simply The Best

Living at Sunnycrest ha not only been a place for me that I call home but for my dog Pepper as well. I have lived here for 5 years with my dog and we have felt welcome since we moved in. Pepper and I came from another senior community and I was so worried that Pepper would not be okay. Pepper was more than comfortable here at Sunnycrest and fell in love with the residents and the staff. I was in the hospital for a while and Sunnycrest took care of Pepper as he was their own. Pepper was very special to me and has since passed on and is missed by all.

Five-Star Rating

What they have done well is being attentive to all of our needs. The laundry service is very good. The food is adequate though, so maybe there could be a more variety of vegetables instead of just salad every night.

Friendly staff and good food including ice cream.

Thank you so much for your kind words Chuck. Nutrition is extremely important at Sunnycrest. Our residents enjoy 3 nutritious meals per day, prepared by our Executive Chef, Jim Clark. The menu selection includes meals such as prime rib, grilled salmon, fresh vegetables and much more. Not to mention the fact that we accommodate all kinds of special dietary needs and preferences (salt free, sugar free, gluten free, heart healthy, vegetarian, kosher (frozen), pureed, chopped, etc.),

Not to mention that Sunnycrest also has its very own 24/7 Café stocked with refreshments, coffee and snacks, and pastries that are resident's are welcome to enjoy at all hours of the day!

It is a wonderful place and I am glad we chose this place for my loved one. Most nursing homes have a dual factor when staying their its like not up to date or anything. With Sunnycrest it is bright and up to date puts you in a happy mood. The staff are considerate and help her with anything she needs and doesn't mind at all. It's definitely worth the price for sure and would only be the place to put my loved on in.

Dear Anonymous: Thank you for the thoughtful review. Sunnycrest is a warm and special place where seniors come to live and engage life in a beautiful and nourishing environment. It is bright, positive, and fresh in its unique design. We are blessed with a wonderful staff of hard working kind people who represent the family ownership with class and dignity. As an Assisted Living community, as opposed to a medical nursing home, we have the ability to serve a range of residents. Our pricing is very competitive and we give more for less because we have no corporate fat. One family has their fourth family member living with us now, and they agree that Sunnycrest is the ONLY community they would trust their family in. Thank you again for the kind review.

Wow. Very Impressed.

I recently had the opportunity to tour Sunnycrest and I must say, I'm VERY impressed.

I know nothing about senior care and my only idea of what a "old folks home" is like was based purely off of movies and TV. Needless to say, I assumed it would be a dreary and depressing experience.

I must admit I was completely wrong. The outside of Sunnycrest is very nice, but as soon as you enter the building you're immediately welcomed by beautiful colors and a modern aesthetic that makes it look more like a high end spa or hotel, rather then an assisted living facility. The staff was extremely cheerful and were more than accommodating.

While touring the facility I was shown the massage studio, the beauty salon, the movie theatre, dining room, and much more. Again, I had no idea these were the type of amenities to expect and after seeing all the socialization and activities that the residents had going on, I have no doubt in my mind that Sunnycrest would do everything in their power to make sure my relatives would have not only an easy transition, but an amazing standard of life.

Keep up the great work guys and I'll be seeing you soon!

Local Representative

Sunnycrest seeks to reimagine senior living not as it is but as it should be. We believe seniors should be surrounded by uplifting beauty, which is how the front remodel was designed. One's surroundings impact how you feel so we created a beautiful environment that welcomes you the moment you step inside. We are the antithesis of the dreary dark "old folks home" of the past. Sunnycrest is where you come to re-engage with life and have social opportunities while no longer having to do the grunt work of life. Our staff is very positive and there is so much to do. In a world where family owned is rare it sure is wonderful to find that unique community where you will quickly feel at home . Thank you.

Sunnycrest review

In the words of my 87 year old Mother "If you can't be at home, this is the best place you can be."

Local Representative

Thank you for the honesty. We appreciate you sharing this, and we believe that before you know it Sunnycrest will be home in a complete sense. At the same time we must understand that any change for a senior can be challenging and "right-sizing" can be emotional and difficult on many levels for both the resident as well as you. Sunnycrest is where you go to live like you mean it, and we thank you for your review. .

Bad Food, Nice Place

I decided to write this review from two years ago because I am planning to visit Sunnycrest again to see if the food has changed. It was pretty bad when I first went. The price is also very steep, but it may be worth it if the food has improved because it was a nice place. It is clean, the staff is friendly, and the location works well for my situation. I may consider it if my next tour goes well.

Local Representative

Dear Anonymous: Many improvements have occurred since you last visited. We created a Dining Experience Committee full of residents who stated that there was too much pasta, and they did not want any burgers or hot dogs. We listened and made many upgrades including adding items they suggested, such as Holland Brown Bean Soup, Belgian Beet Salad, Quinoa, and Roast Sirloin of Beef, for example. Funny story: Yesterday I met with some of the committee members and they mentioned to me "Why can't I get some pasta or a simple hamburger, potato salad, and cole slaw!" When it comes to dining everyone knows what they like best and we try to accommodate everyone's different tastes and desires.

As far as the pricing, I respectfully disagree, as compared to our competitors we are not only more affordable but we believe you get more for less. How do we do it? We are not burdened by a huge corporate infrastructure as we are family owned and have been since our inception in 1988. You are not wasting your money on paying a multitude of bureaucrats to sit in fancy expensive headquarters discussing their 500 facilities. We focus on Sunnycrest, the only community you care about.

As far as our location, we agree, you could not ask for anything better with St. Jude Medical Center basically across the street. We continue to be clean, have a wonderfully friendly staff, and since your last visit we have given the front of the community a face lift that will blow your mind with its beauty and serene spa-like design. So be prepared to be impressed and we look forward to your updated review. Thank you.

Loves It!

We love it! She loves it! The staff is very helpful, courteous, and friendly! They do activities everyday, and they have a calendar. She likes the food!

Local Representative

Dear Loves it!: This review brings a smile to our faces as the staff works so hard day after day to create a warm and caring environment where people feel exactly like you do. Senior living is a calling, and our mission is to make Sunnycrest the best community for seniors possible. Someone said that when they came to Sunnycrest they found their freedom, and we work daily to enhance and improve the lives of our residents. Thank you for your feedback and feel free to stop by and join in one of our exceptional activities. Today I watched the most competitive game of Bocce Ball and all I remember is all of the smiles from all of the residents enjoying their Thursday afternoon.

Unhealthy Food

The one thing that nobody shared with me would be that the food is not so good. When you're looking I think it's important to find out they types of food that people eat. When I say it's not good I don't mean it doesn't taste good, it's just not healthy.

We liked Sunnycrest because it was close to the hospital

Local Representative

Dear Pretty:

We created a Dining Experience Committee full of residents. We listened to the feedback and made upgrades. We focused on healthy foods and nutrition. We did test samples and they voted. I personally am very much focused on the nutritional elements and impact of foods so this is near and dear to my heart. I have total support of the Chef, Chef Jim, who has been a part of Sunnycrest for over 15 years. He was very responsive and we work together to not only have food that tastes good, which was lost in your comment, but also food that is healthy.

As far as our location, yes we enjoy the benefits of being the closest community in OC to St. Jude Medical Center which is basically across the street. This element has, in our view, literally saved lives. No one else is closer and that is never going to change. Thank you.

Do not move to Sunnycrest

My father moved to Sunnycrest because the facility said he would be able to stay there and get the help he needed if his abilities declined. However, when my father was dying Sunnycrest's owner heartlessly refused to allow him access to hospice care, so we had to move him. This caused my father immeasureable pain and suffering, and he died just days after the move. Sunnycrest did not care about my father's health and well-being, needs or desires. Why put yourself or your loved one in a position where you might need assistance or compassion from someone who previously demonstrated no such virtues? Stay away from Sunnycrest.

Local Representative

At Sunnycrest, we value all feedback. We have reached out to the reviewer regarding her experience, and while we do not agree with much of the assertions made, we welcome this opportunity to clarify what Sunnycrest is all about.

Sunnycrest is not a medical facility - we are a family owned and operated senior living facility focused on giving our residents independence and a quality of life with support of a friendly and caring staff. We believe in treating our staff and residents like family and have built and maintained a decades-long legacy of warmth and compassion. Indeed, we maintain and grow our staff even during hard times, so that we can provide our residents with the best care possible.

Regarding hospice care, a prior situation in which the hospice provider failed to be responsive, led to a change in Sunnycrest's policy. It is imperative that our facility remains as free of risks for our residents as possible. A hospice waiver gives a third party the responsibility to act on Sunnycrest property exclusively, which, for many reasons, can be and has proven to be, potentially problematic. To suggest that Sunnycrest would have or could have assessed a resident for fitness for hospice care on a case-by-case basis is factually inaccurate.

We invite anyone considering Sunnycrest for themselves or their loved ones to contact us for a list of referrals of satisfied residents and family members over our decades-long history.

If my aunt had been a suburbanite ins...

If my aunt had been a suburbanite instead of an urban guerilla, this would ok. Also, most things like limits on housekeeping, laundry charges for person laundry not good. Room sizes fabulous! Sunny, large, convenient. Just not for my Aunt.

Local Representative

One of the many unique elements about Sunnycrest is that on many levels you can have the best of both worlds. In the Suburanite v. Urban Guerilla battle we actually have the answer for both. On the East side of the building there is a beautiful horse trail that is quiet, serene, and stunning. It feels like you are in the Country. On the West side you walk out our front door to the hustle and bustle of life from a coffee shop to post office to pharmacy to shopping to doctors offices to restaurants to much more. All in a 2 minute walking radius!

Regarding on housekeeping and laundry I am a little confused. Our housekeeping is included in the rent and performed by the ladies and it is not additional. We also have free laundry rooms on each floor for residents use. There is no charge. We can do your laundry if you like for you for a fee.

You are correct that the room sizes are huge especially in comparison to our competitors which often have tiny rooms with micro square footage that they simply give a fancy name to. We have large and sunny apartments that exceed most people's expectations of square footage. We also by the way, have a good pet policy in case that is a concern. It is also true that we are conveniently located and in the middle of all of the City's action.

I hope your Urban Guerilla Aunt found happiness and if not perhaps give me a call and we would love to have a chance to put a smile on her face. Thank you.

We are happy that you liked Sunnycrest so much but if I could speak to the price issue I would share with you that in the Assisted Living world we are the best value for the standards we keep. There are clearly cheaper places and more expensive places. The question really is what do you get? If it is an apples to apples comparison there is no contest Sunnycrest is the best bang for your buck by far. However, if you are looking for the cheapest senior housing available and do not want or need services then perhaps we are not the correct community for you. Best wishes and if you would like to ever tour Sunnycrest again ask for me personally and I will walk you through options that best suit you and your individual needs whether or not they involve Sunnycrest. Happy to be a resource.

Did not like this place...nice people, but somewhat shabby.

Local Representative

This review stunned me but I am glad it did. Being in Sunnycrest every day you do not see things exactly the same as a new person does, and this review opened our eyes. The owner saw it himself and did an honest analysis of the community and concluded that several elements of the community, especially the front public areas, were indeed in need of a major face lift. He spent over a year designing and planning a remodel to make the building as nice as the people in it. After eighteen months of planning and design in 2014 we began the remodel starting with the front public areas. The owner took a deep and personal role in the design stage and shared with us his vision of a serene spa-like community for seniors, which had never really been done. The results are superior to anything we ever expected. When you walk into Sunnycrest now the very last thing you would ever say is that it is shabby. The comments from residents and their families used words like "stunningly beautiful," "elegant," and "fresh," and that they thought they were walking into a "beautiful boutique hotel." We exceeded expectations and hope you can come by and see and judge for yourself. An enormous amount of time and resources went into producing the most unique design for seniors you have ever seen, and word is the owner is now working on the next phase of the remodel and I for one cannot wait to see what he comes up with.

Your comment was valuable. We appreciate your honesty and the bottom line is that the owner cares and listened. That only happens in a family owned and operated community, so really now you get the benefit of that, plus the people are still nice...

Located in an area crammed with buildings. Very little parking. Nice looking building in itself.

Local Representative

When Sunnycrest was originally built we were basically alone there surrounded by parking lots. Then people realized the huge value of being close to the hospital, and you are correct, building popped up all around us. The bad news is that it has impacted parking. The good news is that we have our own parking and while we have to make sure our residents and family are the ones parking there, we have more parking in the back than you probably saw in the front. We would never trade our proximity to St. Jude for all the parking in the world, but at the same time we understand your concern and we hand out parking passes to residents and family so you would be able to park at your convenience. Thank you for the compliment regarding the look of the building. We have made further upgrades and invite you to walk in and see for yourself just how nice senior living can be. Thank you.

We are happy you liked Sunnycrest and hope you chose us as your Community. We understand this is a big decision and we are happy to walk people through the process from A to Z. We have been trusted in Fullerton for over 25 years, and have had 4 members of one family live with us. Anyone can make a fancy brochure or hire sleek marketing people. We do not even have marketing people because all of our resources and focus go into the residents and their needs. Someone looking will most likely meet with me, the Executive Director. No one wants to be marketed, especially when it comes to a precious family member. We believe that marketers often have their own agendas, and we want to focus on your you and agenda. That is why we do not have sales-people. We appreciate your comment. Thank you.

Was very impressed by this facility. I loved the premises. It was very clean and there was a lot of different areas for the residents to participate in activities. Residents all seemed very active and happy. Staff were very friendly. The grounds were well kept and some activities were also available to do outside. Rooms were well equiped. Sounds like this facility really tries to implement things that the residents want. We will definetly schedule a tour for my mother in law.
