Will not recommend to anyone

Our parent lived here for about a year and a half in 2016/2017. Director of Nursing (DON) is hardly ever available to answer questions. She does not return calls. Complaints by many. Many times when I visited which was almost everyday, I found my family member’s bed pad wet underneath the quilt. Breakfast tray brought in and
sat on the counter hours before my parent got up. We would sit in my parents room for about four hours and nobody came in to check. Suppose to check every 2 hours. Staff would sit in the locked med room and ignore residents and guest. Many times we found our parents pills on the floor of the room so we knew they did not wait until they were taken. Good luck if you could find someone on the floor much less in the building. Friends who visited would inform us of our parent sitting in a urine soaked wheelchair. If you complained they would give you the cold shoulder. Parent was also seen left downstairs in the dark by herself. I would not recommend this place at all.

Very nice place

My mother has lived at Mennowood assisted living for 4 months. The staff did a very good job transitioning her into her new home. We are very happy that we found such a nice place for her to live. Every employee that we've met is very nice as are the residents. Good food, lots of activities, nice rooms that are kept clean and the nursing staff is great.
We highly recommend Mennowood Retirement Community.

Nice community

This is a very nice community and the staff did a really great job on our tour here, they took their time showing us around and they answered all our questions. I just did not feel that this was going to be a good fit for my father and that there would not be enough going on to keep him busy.

Great Care

I am very happy with this community. The staff is great and very caring. The food is appealing with a nice variety. They offer alot of activities. I would be happy to recommend this community to other families. We are happy with the cleanliness here.

A Great Place to Live

I moved into Mennowood the first week of June. In the short time that I have been here I have been pleased with all phases of the community.

The food is very good. There are always alternatives to choose if you do not want the planned meal. The dining room is very nice with damask table cloth and napkins. The servers are pleasant. They make an effort to get to know you and your preferences. If you request coffee after the meal just once, they will check with you each time to see if you want it again.

The staff is friendly and helpful. I was helped carrying in my boxes on moving day and they helped me with some assembly of my furniture. If you need help moving furniture or maintenance assistance, it is just a phone call away.

There is no excuse for being lonesome or bored. There are activities all day long, every day. There are small rooms, a living room, sun porch, etc. to sit and visit with other residents. There are outings planned each week with a wide variety of destinations.

It has been a very pleasant move.

Absolutely wonderful

Things are going wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. She has been there since the end of December and she has moved from the assisted living side to the independent living side of the facility. She is very happy there. She is getting three square meals a day and meeting new people.

The people there are the nicest group of people that you would ever meet.

The people there are the nicest group of people that you would ever meet. They are very accommodating. They try hard to make you happy. They do their best on looking after you. If I had anything to say that is not my top rating it would be the food. It's not bad, but it could be better. For the independent living the prices are very reasonable. The people are very caring. Everything I have to say about the Mennowood is very good. They are excellent. (Care Services & Activities are not applicable)

I think they do a good job of taking care of my father..

I think they do a good job of taking care of my father. I just wish they would push liquids on him more and make sure he's getting more hydration. Everything else has been really good. The meals are good and he is eating well. The cleanliness of the facility is excellent. It's always very clean. The staff has been very nice and helpful. I would recommend the Mennowood Retirement community. It's very good.

I have been very pleased.

I have been very pleased. The staff is great, it's very clean. The apartment is a good size. They were even great working with us before we moved in. We are very happy with them.

Feels like family

Mennowood feels like family. My mother is thrilled to be a part of this community. We have been very impressed with their approach to individual needs. I would highly recommend this community to my friends.

My grandmother recently moved here and after the first week, it has really been a good place. The lady who helped get us settled in, kept checking on her which is nice. My grandma is shy so she keeps to herself. They have an activities manager that has actually gotten her out of her room and had her participate in activities. I personally walked around and talked to a few residents and they are lovely. I also visited around dinnertime and it seemed most everyone ate dinner together. She is in the independent living, so it's nice that they are off on another wing. There is a courtyard that backs up to her room so she can just step right outside for some fresh air. Overall, this has been one of the best places in Newport News :)

I sent an email request to ...

I sent an email request to schedule a site visit. I got no response. After a couple days, I called to schedule a visit. I asked if my parents could come together. The woman I spoke to said they didn't have any couples and she'd have to check and get back with me. It's now 4 days later and I still haven't heard from her. Because their lack of calling back, this facility is definitely not one I'm interested in.

very nice choice ...

very nice choice of rooms..major renovation going on till late spring but results will be quite updated and appealing..staff very friendly and easy to talk to.

Positive Review

We started using Mennowood as a weekend respite for our mother who is 89 and has some dementia. Everyone was friendly, kind, caring and professional. They took very good care of our mother. Everyone remembered her and her needs each time we went. So when we determined it was time for her to have continuing care that we could no longer provide for her, we turned to Mennowood. We believe it is because of their staff that our mother made such a good transition to living there. There are many activities which they ensure she has the opportunity to participate in (and she does). The meals are very nice and each person is given personal attention by the wait staff. Every thing is always clean and tidy. The building looks more like a home than a facility. We have the highest regard for everyone at Mennowood and recommend that you consider making an appointment to see if it meets the needs of your loved one.
