In 2013 when the Eden Care home on Apple Valley Drive opened its doors, my husband was standing in line to be the first male resident.
Frankly, the family had hoped Don would be able to remain in his home of the past 43 years , but as years slipped by, safety became an item. Three floors of lots of stairs, a pool, and a couple of inviting parks for wandering proved too risky. The next stop was a large facility which offered Memory Care on a big scale, and there was hope that the stimulation from programs and the attention to him personally would be beneficial. There were lots of games of Bingo, field trips, entertainment, but the loss of about 1/ 4 of his eyesight plus the continued ravages of the disease continued too quickly. He suffered frequent falls, loss of weight from not being able to see food , toileting issues. His condition was not BAD enough for the full time nursing care offered, and not GOOD enough to stay in Memory Care. We were asked to find a new living arrangement where he could be given the care he needed.
We found an Eden Home. The physical house was attractive, the staff well trained and professional, and the atmosphere calm and peaceful. Such special things as location with easy access to highways for visitors, aromatics (?) mneumtic therapy (?), cooperative interaction for Hospice and special needs workers, visits from a barber shop made life for him all that he could need.
The quality of care, however, is the very best treasure of all. Of the many positive aspects of life for of care residents of Eden homes that deserve description, the total can be summed up with those little words, the quality of care. Are we glad our map led us to 4025 Apple Valley Drive? Just ask me, or ask my kids!!
