Senior Moving and Downsizing Industry Terms

As you begin speaking with senior moving and downsizing agencies, it will be helpful for you to understand the terms below.

Downsizing services

Also called rightsizing services, these business help individuals who are typically scaling down from their current living situation. Downsizing services may aid the senior in finding a suitable retirement community, going over available floor plans, and help plan and deliver what to bring to the new home. Though not unique to seniors alone, downsizing services can be beneficial in aiding the senior for the next transition in life by reducing the amount of items currently in their home to make it more manageable to keep up or to prepare for a move to an assisted living facility, nursing home, or specialized care center.

National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM)

A certification by this organization is the gold standard for senior transition services for both downsizing and moving. Certified Senior Move Managers ® not only help you move your belongings, but they also cater to the emotional aspects of the moving and downsizing process.

Senior Move Managers

Highly trained and certified (through the NASSM) movers who aid seniors and their families during the transition process. They are equipped to handle the emotional and potentially stressful issues that may arise during the senior’s move.

Senior movers

Specialized movers who cater to seniors’ unique needs and demands in moving. Senior movers are capable of assisting the senior in all aspects of a move from planning for a new place to live, organizing current items in the home, packing items, selling and giving away excess items, and safely relocating the packed items to the new home, to unpacking at the new location and setting up the new living space.
