Gift box subscription services are hot right now, and companies are filling all kinds of niches with product samples, handmade treats, and surprise items. Among the most popular subscription box categories are cosmetics, fashion items, wellness products, cocktails, baby gear, and even pet treats.

One large, growing, and often overlooked audience for gift boxes is seniors and the people who care about them, especially those who are too far away or overwhelmed with work to make frequent visits. Packages That Care, a new service based in Las Vegas, is one of just a handful of companies serving up senior gift boxes, inspired by founder Joshua Abrams’ close relationship with his grandmother.

Packages That Care’s boxes are intended to give seniors a one-time or monthly treat with a collection of items they will enjoy or that they often run out of, such as tissues and toothpaste. All the items in each box have been OKed by geriatric care professionals for safety, practicality and ease of use.

Product Description:

One-time or monthly deliveries of care boxes for seniors that include items like crossword puzzles and playing cards, pens, stress toys, personal care items (toothpaste, hand lotion, etc.), and other small items chosen by Packages That Care staffers. Senders can include a personalized message in each box.

Pros:

Packages That Care boxes contain gender-neutral items that don’t take up a lot of space and are useful and entertaining. Puzzle books, playing cards, and other printed items are large print versions. Food is not included in the boxes, which makes them a good choice for friends and relatives on special diets or who have food allergies.

Senders have the option of one-time or monthly box deliveries, and if you’re feeling generous you can also send a discounted box to a senior in need through Packages That Care’s giving and sharing program. And yes, you can send boxes to yourself as well.

Cons:

As of now, senders can’t customize the boxes they send, although Packages That Care says that option is coming in the future.

Best For…

A Packages That Care gift box subscription seems tailored for seniors who live in an assisted living community or nursing home where space is at a premium, especially seniors who don’t have family nearby for frequent errand runs and visits. It’s a healthy alternative for seniors who can’t indulge in snack boxes, and it’s a bargain compared to services like monthly flower delivery, which can run cost $45 per month and more.
