Dallas Respite Care and Adult Day Care

Aging at home with family caregivers is the ideal for most people. When those caregivers have to hold down a day job outside the home or need time to tend to their own needs, adult day care services can provide health supervision, social time and hot meals for seniors. They also give peace of mind to working adult caregivers who don’t want to leave a loved one home alone during the day. Here’s the scoop on licensed adult day care services in Dallas.

What are adult day care and respite care programs like?

In general, day care for adults is a drop-off program for seniors and other adults with daily care needs. Some programs offer transportation for seniors to and from the site, which may be to a church hall, community center, senior living campus, or other appropriate setting. Centers usually provide care Monday through Friday (except for major holidays) during standard working hours, sometimes as long as 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For some families, 5-days-a-week care is the best option, while others may need care only a couple of days per week or during a caregiver vacation or illness.

All adult day services licensed by the state provide a hot lunch, and some also provide breakfast and healthy snacks. Nursing staff members oversee medication and monitoring schedules, make sure attendees stay hydrated, and help them with toileting and other personal needs throughout the day. Some day care programs offer programs tailored to patients with dementia.

Social activities can include card and board games, adaptive exercise programs, music therapy, outside time including gardening, visits from friendly therapy pets, and field trips. In Texas, day activity and health services programs are licensed by the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS).
