Due to the active nature of today’s seniors, many are deciding that getting back to work is the best use of their time and abilities. Employers are also seeing the benefit of long-term experience, spurring mature workers to be in demand in Washington D.C. and all over the country. For many seniors, finding a job may prove to be a bit challenging, especially if they have been out of the job seeking game for several decades. The good news is – there is help available.
AARP offers a number of resources for senior job searchers. The Work channel offers information, as well as education to help individuals over the age of 50 find a job, tweak their resume, update the interview skills and negotiate benefits and salary.
The National Employer Team is a type of collaboration that was developed by the AARP to help those searching for a job who are over the age of 50. They help them connect with employers who put value in hiring experienced workers.
OIC DC Works has recently launched short and long-term employment options for Washington D.C. residents over the age of 18. There is no age limit to these services and those who enroll in this paid training receive training for job readiness, skills training, conflict resolution skills and help with job placement.
This training is offered four to five hours each day for five days a week and during the time present, seniors can receive a stipend based on their attendance and time put in. It is a 12-week training program and at the end, the participants receive a job with a local employer.
Goodwill in the Greater Washington, D.C. area helps seniors obtain a competitive employment opportunity. Not only does this help seniors in the area, it also helps employers find quality workers. The career services offered have been specifically designed for job seekers who are unemployed and they receive one-on-one support with assistance for job placement.
The AARP Foundation offers two different types of employment assistance. The first is the WorkSearch Assessment System that offers community-level career and job assistance for seniors who are looking for employment. These free services will help seniors assess their skills, abilities, and interest.
The other program is the Senior Community Service Employment Program, or the SCSEP, which helps those over the age of 55 strengthen their work skills, obtain new training and find new job opportunities. It is important to note that both programs require certain income limitations be met prior to a senior being able to benefit from the services that are currently available for assistance.
