How to Get Around Tucson Without Driving

Losing your mobility or the ability to drive doesn’t mean that you have to give up your freedom and you don’t have to be housebound. There are many transportation options available here in Tucson. Whether it’s public transportation, rideshare services, or a taxi you can find the right transportation for your situation and your budget in Tucson.

Regional Transportation Authority

In Tucson, the RTA takes care of all public transportation and this involves the buses, shuttles, vans, and ride share services. The Sun Tran is Tucson’s bus system and it is accessible to everyone including those who have disabilities. There is also the Sun Van which is a paratransit service that is only for those with disabilities. All the vehicles are wheelchair compatible and will make additional stops as needed by the disabled passengers. Seniors who are 65 and older can get a reduced fare, all you need to do is visit the Special Services Office at Alameda to get your SunGO ID and fare card.

Using A Taxi

There are a few different taxi companies in Tucson including Yellow Cab, Discount Cab, and The Cool Cab Company. A taxi can be helpful because it will take you door-to-door meaning you don’t have to walk to or from a bus station to get to your destination. They might be a little more expensive than public transportation, but you can call ahead to schedule a ride if you know that you are going to need to get somewhere in the future.

Uber And Lyft Ride Share Service

If you don’t want to use a taxi but still want door-to-door service you can use a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft. Both of these companies operate in Tucson and all you have to do to get a ride is schedule one through their app or online. Rideshare is a great way for loved ones to arrange for transportation for their elderly family members even if they aren’t there with them. You do need to make sure you understand the rates and fees because they change throughout the day when the demand for a car is higher.

Senior Specialized Transportation

Many seniors receive in-home health care through a provider or other type of aide and these services might also include transportation. That can mean anything from picking up groceries to running errands to incidental transportation during an emergency. If you’re loved one has a caregiver, check to see if they can provide transportation and that way you know they are with someone who can take care of them if something should happen while they are out. In Tucson, companies like ComeForCare, Senior Helpers, and Heartfelt Helperbees all offer transportation services.

Senior Transportation Services In Tucson

There are a few other resources that seniors can use in Tucson to help them get around. AZS Transport is a service that will pick you up and take you wherever you need to go. They don’t charge their fares based on meter but by round trip distance and time. While they aren’t wheelchair accessible, they do allow service animals and other pets.

The Pima Council on Aging created a list of all the different transportation services that are available to seniors in the area. There are paid services as well as volunteer based services so you can choose which works best for you and your budget as well as find the right transportation service for your needs.
