Toronto Senior Centers

Game nights, computer classes, fitness programs and more help Toronto seniors to stay physically and mentally active as they age. Older adults can access a variety of social and recreational services provided by local senior centers and community groups.

Entertainment

Toronto seniors can visit one of thirteen Older Adult Centers spread throughout the city to take part in special events and weekly programs open to adults over the age of 60. A number of community centers also offer social clubs and drop-in games for older adults, including cards, dominoes, chess, darts, bingo and much more. Active seniors can try their hand at a variety of competitive sports such as pickleball, table tennis, badminton, and golf.

Toronto adults aged 60 and older can take advantage of special Parks, Forestry & Recreation rates. Seniors enjoy a 50% discount on all recreation programs, special rates at municipal golf courses, and special group rates when booking facilities and sports fields for special events. Seniors over the age of 65 also enjoy lower rates on ferry tickets to the Toronto Islands.

Education

Along with numerous recreational programs, Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation also offers educational courses for seniors looking to learn a new skill or hobby. Older adults can find seasonal classes that center around arts and crafts, cooking, gardening, and more. Computer lessons are also available for older adults of all experience levels at several Toronto senior centers and the Toronto Public Library.

If you are interested in taking university-level classes, a number of local institutions have course offerings for senior students who are seeking to further their education. George Brown College, the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s College and other Toronto universities all offer continuing education programs for eligible adults.

Fitness

Toronto residents can stay active both indoors and outdoors through city recreation programs for older adults. Seniors over 60 can choose from hundreds of specialized exercise and aquafit courses held at over 40 fitness centers and 63 indoor pools citywide. Indoor and outdoor ice rinks also schedule skating times and offer lessons for older adults. Keeping active as you age can help you to alleviate pain and reduce the risk of disease by strengthening your body and improving your cardiovascular health.

Performing arts

If you were born to take the stage, then there are several Toronto area performing groups that will make you feel right at home. The Burlington Footnotes is a dance group that offers seniors over the age of 50 the chance to take classes and participate in live performances that feature tap, jazz, ballet and more. For those who are interested in acting, the Estelle Craig ACT II STUDIO of Ryerson University’s G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education offers training and performance opportunities for students over the age of 50.

Meetups

As you age, it can become more and more difficult to get out of the house and meet new people. Luckily, online Meetup groups make it easy to find friends in your neighborhood that share your interests. Toronto is home to dozens of Meetups geared towards the city’s over 50 population, from singles groups to adventure clubs.

Traveling

Many Toronto seniors choose to see the world after they retire, and group tours are becoming an increasingly popular travel option. Senior Discovery Tours is Canada’s largest group tour operator, offering over 100 exotic destinations and cruises for customers to choose from. ELDERTREKS plans adventures and expeditions to continents across the globe for small groups of travelers over the age of 50.
