Toronto Aging in Place

Aging in place might sound like an odd concept but it is just the desire to stay in the comfort of your home as long as you can and receive health care there. More seniors are choosing this option and there is a growing number of services available to help make this happen. Homemakers can help you maintain your house by cooking and cleaning while home health aides and nurses can attend to your medical needs. No matter where you are in Toronto, there are services and programs available to help you stay in your house.

Paying For In-Home Care Services

If you qualify for home care services through the Ontario Health Insurance Plan, then the government will pay for a wide variety of services in your area to help you stay in your home. If you don’t qualify for home care services through your insurance then you can choose from a variety of private services and pay a fee to get home care. You can also choose to appeal the qualification decision to see if you can get your services paid for but there are also subsidies to help you pay for services if you can’t afford them.

Cost Of In-Home Care Services

If you do qualify for home care through your insurance, then you won’t pay for your services. The government will send a caseworker to your home to assess your needs and they will choose the services and providers that best fits your needs.

If you use a private company, costs will vary based on a few different factors. The type of care you need, how often you use it, and where you live will all play into your total cost. Generally speaking, you can find services that range from $500 to $7,500 per month. Again, depending on how often you need a caregiver in your home it could add up to over $100 per day but it could also be less if you don’t need someone with you 24/7.

Finding In-Home Care Services

Again, if you qualify for home care you won’t have to look for a provider, your caseworker will find exactly what you need. But if you do have to look for private companies, you should do some research to make sure you find a good fit for your needs and your budget. You can ask for recommendations from friends or you can check the Better Business Bureau of Toronto to read user reviews.

Make sure that each provider has the proper licensing, insurance and see if they are bonded. You should ask how they screen their employees and if they do background checks. Find out how they schedule their clients and handle payments so you’re aware of everything before you agree to use their services.

Additional Care Services

If you aren’t ready for full-time live-in care at your home but still need some extra help around the house, you have plenty of options. Online service platforms have grown exponentially lately and you can find whatever you need as long as you have access to a computer or the internet.

Barks N’ Purrs is a local pet service provider that can help you with anything from dog walking to pet sitting. Handy can help you find local house cleaners and both Favour and Ask For Task are good options if you have other chores or errands you need help with. Fix It has a team of handymen that can help you with anything your house needs from repairs to remodels. Be sure to ask plenty of questions before you hire anyone for their services.
