Financial Assistance for Toledo Seniors

Living can be expensive and watching your nest egg disappear is scary.  If you are struggling to cover your monthly essentials, there are programs from both non-profit organizations and the government to help you with these expenses.  As you continue to read, you will find information highlighting programs and services to help you cover expenses such as housing, food, utilities, home maintenance, home repairs, and social engagement in Toledo.

Good Food

Meals on Wheels will bring homebound seniors meals.  Seniors can choose from various meal plans such as one meal a day, two meals a day, or a five-day meal pack.  Weekend and holiday meals are also available.  All meals are nutritional and well-balanced. There is financial assistance available through the Meal Client Assistance Program.

There are a few food programs from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.  There are Food banks and Electronic Benefits Transfer options.  Individuals can purchase food at supermarkets or a farmer’s market.

Utilities and home maintenance support

If you need assistance updating your home, the Home Accessibility Program provides grants for home renovations to improve the quality of life. They also build ramps for wheelchair accessibility. The City of Toledo also offers an owner-occupied home rehabilitation program.

The Ohio Department of Aging offers home repair programs for eligible, low-income seniors. They provide home maintenance for routine services such as furnaces, windows, and electrical fuses.  Home repairs include repair and installation of plumbing, gutters, shingles, and removing hazards. Home modification helps make homes more accessible especially for the elderly and disabled. They also offer private, affordable senior apartments.

If you are having trouble paying utility bills, Ohio Development Services Agency helps low-income families Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). This program will assist with the high cost of heating. The State of Ohio also has a Weatherization Program to help low-income households make their homes more energy efficient, which will ultimately save them money on utility bills.

You can search for affordable housing on the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority.  The HUD website also has a search function so you can search for senior subsidized apartments.  There are also nonprofit organizations that help with housing including Catholic Charities of Toledo.
