Surprise Senior Centers

Just because you are retired doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. The city offers a wide array of activities for all, and you can choose a simple activity like playing a friendly game or traveling the world. With so much to choose from, you may have a hard time deciding what you want to do versus finding something to do.

Play a game or take a class

The Surprise Senior Center is located near the heart of the original town and is east of Gaines Park. The Senior Center is bursting with activities for adults 50 or over. Membership for a resident is $12 a year or $15 a year for a non-resident. Activities and programs are designed for seniors and include classes with games and crafts. Try a friendly game of Pinochle, Bingo, sciences, health, Bridge, Shuffleboard, or Bunco. If you are more of an arts person, there is a quilting club and a Creative Crafts class.

Take a class

RISE is a grassroots organization that offers non-credit enrichment classes to encourage the continuation of learning. Rio Salado College Lifelong Learning Center in Surprise hosts the classes. Membership is $65 for two months and allows you to take as many classes as you want! The classes cover topics such as social sciences, natural sciences, health and wellness, religion, arts, finance, and lifestyles. You can also learn another language with resources at the Maricopa County Library Northwest Regional Library in Surprise.

Keep yourself fit

The Surprise Senior Center offers a state of the art fitness center open to seniors. Gym membership for residents is $30, and for non-residents, it’s $35. There are fitness advisors who will work with you to make sure you are getting the best workout. There are also fitness classes available to you at the center including SilverSneakers, morning stretch, chair exercise, line dancing, and more. There are also aquatic classes at the nearby Aqua Fitness Club of Sun City at a $5 membership cost per year and $15 for an 8-week fitness class held twice a week.

Give your time to the community

Keep yourself active while helping others. You may discover there is not a better feeling than showing others what you have learned in your lifetime. It will give you a sense of pride, satisfaction, and accomplishment. Surprise is always looking for volunteers whether it is a regular or a one-time special event. There are opportunities in the areas of community and recreation service, fire/medical department, police department, water resource management, human service, and more.

Meet some people with similar interests

If you wish to find additional friends other than the ones at the recreation centers, there are specialized groups on Meetup. Here you can find groups of singles, philanthropists, art explorers, and more.

Travel to a new place

The Surprise Senior Center plans numerous trips with seniors in mind. If you wish to see the world, there are groups for that too! Phoenix International Travel Meetup offers adventures for all ages to places. Trips are planned based on the group’s input.
