Surprise Family Caregiver Benefits

The baby boomer generation has started to reach their retirement years, and as their health declines, they are turning to family members more often for care. It’s not uncommon for seniors to want to stay in their homes longer and receive care from people they know. Being a caregiver is a big job, and at times it can feel overwhelming so you shouldn’t feel guilty if you need to ask for help or take a short break. There are services and programs in Surprise to help you be the best caregiver you can.

Alzheimer’s Association: Desert Southwest Chapter

The Alzheimer’s Association does a great job of making sure caregivers get the support they need while they take care of their family members with Alzheimer’s. This disease is not easy for anyone involved and caregivers need to take care of themselves just as much as they need to take care of their loved ones. The Desert Southwest Chapter serves all of Arizona, and they offer plenty of resources.

The Expressions program is a way for both caregivers and patients to use art to connect and tell their story. Paintings, stories, photos, and more all share the emotions people go through as they deal with this disease. You can find all the artwork online, and you can contribute your own as a way to release your emotions and share with others.

A support group is a simple yet powerful way to take care of yourself. Weekly meetings allow for a chance to talk with other caregivers and share advice and encouragement. A few groups will also offer free respite care so this time can serve as a short break from your duties. There are no support groups located directly in Surprise through the Alzheimer’s Association, but there are plenty in the surrounding cities. If you can’t make any of those meetings, you can go to ALZConnected and join an online support group.

There are a lot of programs that the Desert Southwest chapter offers that can help you as a caregiver. They have numerous educational courses, care consultations, professional caregiver training, a 24-hour helpline, and a safe return program. You can find more information here.
