Live Like a Local in Surprise

Surprise is a rapidly growing city in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. You made a wise choice moving here. Along with abundant sunshine and gorgeous desert scenery, you will be basking with all the fun local activities that await you. You can catch Spring Training camp for both the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers MLB teams. Golf courses and hiking are easy pastimes in Surprise. Here is a list of some restaurants, shopping areas, and hair salons to help you start getting acclimated to the area.

Surprise food

Saigon Kitchen offers Vietnamese cuisine in a chic bistro. The owners, Tran family, are originally from Saigon and brought their immense flavors to Surprise. You can try a variety of appetizers like the Saigon jumbo shrimp, various spring rolls, and pho noodle soup. You can also try the different wings with bursting flavors like lemongrass, sweet and sour, or salt and pepper. For dinner, try some favorites like sweet and sour ribs, seafood rice vermicelli, or rack of pork with garlic noodles. Prices are surprisingly affordable costing less than $20 a person for a three-course meal.

From Vietnam flavors, we move to French flavors at Amuse Bouche. This gem serves American food with a French influence such as filet mignon and quiche, hummus, paninis, and other sandwiches. The homemade meatloaf sandwich, chicken liver pate, and beef tenderloin with carrot butter sauce over potato risotto are other favorites. Recently, Amuse Bouche stopped serving dinner but is open for breakfast and lunch. They also cater and provide cooking classes.

Now we move to Mexican flavors, which you expect to find in Arizona. Rio Mirage Cafe offers fajitas, chimichangas, burritos, tacos, and seafood. The restaurant’s specialty El Rico burro is an enormous deep-fried flour tortilla stuffed with fajita chicken, onions, mushroom, bell pepper, and cheese, kicked with spicy poblano peppers and topped with jalapeno cream cheese and red sauce. You can also order soups, salads, and other Mexican favorites.

Surprising shopping

Surprise Marketplace is a sprawling plaza with shops like Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Ross, Best Buy, and Lowes for some of the larger stores. Visit their website to find deals at all stores.

If you like something that is a little more distinctive, visit the Surprise Shop. They sell gently used furniture and home furnishings that you can add to your new home. The selection is bigger than you might think with a huge warehouse and two showrooms. They get truckloads of new items each week, so you may want to check on a regular basis if you are looking for something in particular.

There’s a healthy grocery store you should check out. Sprouts makes healthy living easy and affordable offering ready-to-eat meals, gourmet cheese, natural and organic groceries, and fresh baked goods.
