Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. With the population currently at over 120,000, it is estimated to be the second fastest municipalities after Gilbert in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
In 1938, it started as a small town that was only one square mile of farmland. However, today the town has expanded to a city that covers an area of 85.6 miles.
According to Elizabeth Wusich Stoft, the city got its unusual name because of her mother, Flora Mae Statler, who founded the town, once commented that she would be surprised if it amounted to much. Yet, the town grew at such an astonishing rate that it was incorporated into a city in 1960. Many retirees have settled in the city because it’s near Sun City, a retirement community.
Today the city is bound by four main roads: Greenway Road on the south, Mirage Road on the east, Bell Round bounds on the north, and Dysart Round on the west.
Apart from a local bus, the main transportation is by private cars, taxis, and rideshares.
The bus service starts at Surprise Park-and-Ride, located at 13327 W. Bell Rd. South of Bell Rd., which is a block east of 134th Dr.
It offers two routes, Route 571, which only runs on weekdays, and Route 573, which only operates on weekends.
Route 571 runs to the Greenway Road bus stop, which is at Surprise Elementary School, and then proceeds to 1st Avenue and onto 18th Avenue.
Route 573 starts at 75th at the Church of Joy and travels to the Arrowhead Towne Center, which is the Glendale Park-and-Ride, and then proceeds onto Phoenix.
