Financial Assistance for Surprise Seniors

Seniors with limited income know that stretching their savings can be hard. Surprise is a little more expensive than the national average, especially for housing. There are agencies and nonprofits ready to help these seniors make the most of their nest eggs. Seniors or loved ones can contact numerous programs and agencies and nonprofits for assistance with necessities such as food, utilities, housing, transportation, companion care, and even social activities.

Help with food

Benevilla offers fresh, home-delivered meals prepared in the popular Birt’s Bistro kitchen, using local produce and homemade recipes. Seniors can choose from three different meal styles to fit their tastes. These meals are delivered around lunchtime by area volunteers.

Seniors may also qualify for Arizona Nutrition Assistance. This program provides healthy food to low-income seniors and families. According to proven research, inadequate diets can cause severe health problems for the elderly. You can apply for Nutrition Assistance at the local Arizona Department of Economic Security office. If you have any questions, call 602.771.1840.

Help with your home

If you need a handyman for minor repairs such as fixing a faucet or changing a light bulb in a ceiling fixture, contact Benevilla. These skilled volunteers help those who are unable to do these tasks themselves. The Arizona Department of Housing also assists with emergency repairs and rehabilitation. If you need to look further, the City of Surprise has housing assistance.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income households with energy bills by helping with payment, energy crisis assistance, or weatherization and energy-related home repairs. There is also a program for Maricopa County residents who need utility assistance with utility deposits and payments.

Seniors can also explore housing options through the Arizona Housing Department. There are additional low-income housing resources including Affordable Rental Movement (ARM). When touring senior communities, be sure to ask about reduced rental rate opportunities as many offer options for limited income seniors since this is a very widespread situation.

Enjoying time with company

The Surprise Senior Center has several activities for residents at little or no cost. These activities include day trips, exercise programs, games like Bingo and Bridge, crafts, quilting, and movies. Seniors can also participate in the balanced, hot lunch program for $3.50. In addition to all this, there is a state of the art fitness center open to seniors during the week for a membership fee of $30 for residents, and $35 for non-residents.

The Senior Companion Program provides services to homebound seniors to give them social time. Volunteers age 55 or older assist these homebound seniors with things such as chores, transportation, and companionship.

Additional services are available to assist you in Surprise. Check out any of these other agencies for additional help: Maricopa County Area Agency on Aging, Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities. These groups are here to help you stretch your budget.
