The Phoenix Metropolitan area gives Catholic seniors a choice for health care and wellness support through local charities and churches, which provide home care, activity centers, assisted living facilities, adult day care, and home care assistance. Surprise seniors can get the Catholic support they need through these charities and churches for their overall health, spiritual needs, medical requests, and care.
Support is easy to find with numerous Catholic churches in Surprise. St. Clare of Assisi offers various groups to assist seniors with needs both physically and spiritually. St. Helen in Glendale has a young at heart group for those over 50 to meet, socialize, pray, and support each other.
Duet Care through St. James gives homebound seniors assistance with transportation to appointments, shopping, computer help, and friendly visits and safety checks.
Saint Joan of Arc in Phoenix offers ministry geared towards seniors complete with seminars, retreats, scripture lessons, outings, and games. The singles group helps widowed, divorced, or never married seniors meet new people in a comfortable environment.
For additional Catholic support and companionship, FSL created two senior centers. There is a location in nearby Peoria. This center offers recreational activities, exercise programs, daily lunches, wellness programs, and other social groups in a warm, caring environment.
The Foundation for Senior Living (FSL) was formed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix to improve senior’s living through social services, housing, and health services.
FSL provides home care assistance to promote maximum independence to homebound seniors. Each individual receives a customized plan to meet his or her specific needs all on a schedule that the individual chooses because control is essential.
FSL offers adult day health services for active programs, exercises, mingling, and medical assistance. Whether this is respite care or socialization for seniors, these programs enrich the mind and well-being of the individual.
Assisted group living provides extended care and housing options to those adults who need additional care for behavioral health. These groups also provide training on daily living tasks. There is counseling available to both the patient and family to ensure that life is moving in the right direction. There are FSL homes throughout the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Since these programs have been so successful, other programs have used this program as a model.
Other FSL health services include:
prescription reminders and assistance
transportation to appointments
errand running and cleaning
community and caregiver education
Area Catholic hospitals also provide health and wellness classes. St. Luke’s offers health seminars and free hearing screenings.
Seniors in medical facilities can also receive Catholic support through Holy Cross in Mesa. Currently, they regularly visit Banner Baywood Heart Hospital, Banner Baywood Medical Center, and Mt View Medical Center. This group also visits nursing homes and homebound senior’s homes to provide spiritual support for the mental well-being. They work with 20,000 people annually through this program.
