St. Petersburg Veterans Benefits

Returning veterans deserve the best care, and with the benefits they earn with their service, that’s just what they get in St. Petersburg. Here veterans can find access to a plethora of services that help them with any need they might have. Health care programs include access to mental health services and substance abuse treatment as well as care for disabled or injured veterans. St. Petersburg also has programs for housing assistance, homeless veterans and employment services that include job training and placements.

St. Petersburg Veteran Health Care

Health care is one of the number one benefits for veterans, but unfortunately, there is a decent sized group of veterans that don’t realize they have access to health benefits. The VA says any active duty military member in addition to veterans with a discharge that isn’t dishonorable can get health benefits. Also, National Guard members and Reservists can get health care if they served during a federally ordered service period. Each veteran and military member falls into a priority group and applications will be sorted according to those groups.

The VA has a medical center in Bay Pines that acts as the central hub for the Tampa Bay area. Seniors can find things like mental health wellness checks, primary care, at-home services, hospice care, and supportive services for their caregivers. St. Petersburg has a community clinic, and this provides services like mental health care, women’s care, EKG service, phlebotomy, primary care, and referrals to the Bay Pines center.

The VA also runs a Medical Foster Home Program for veterans that need long-term care. This program acts as an alternative to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Seniors move in with vetted caretakers who provide them with daily care, prepared meals, and transportation to places like the doctor’s office or hospital.

St. Petersburg Veteran Housing

The Florida Benefits Guide can help Florida-based veterans learn more about the services and programs they can use due to their services. Included in these services are ones for housing. A few programs help veterans save money or find a home while others help homeless veterans. These include:

GI home loans are guaranteed through the VA, which ensures a part of your loan for a home, manufactured home, or condominium. Veterans that are already homeowners might be able to refinance their loan through this program.

Eligible veterans can use property tax exemptions to save money. There are several types of property tax exemptions, and each one has different criteria.

Homeless veterans or those that might become homeless soon can contact the Supportive Services for Veteran Families in St. Petersburg. Along with help finding a job, this group can help place families in transitional homes into permanent homes.
