Savannah Support Groups For Caregivers

As the population gets older, the elderly turn to their family members to provide care so they can stay in their homes longer. Using family is a good way to save money and help seniors feel more comfortable with their care but being a caregiver is a big job, and it can be stressful at times. If you’re a caregiver and feel like you’re all alone or you’re run down from your duties, then you might want to look for a support group. Support groups can help you connect with others, and Savannah has some great options as well as other supportive services for caregivers.

Hospice Savannah & The Edel Caregiver Institute

Hospice Savannah is a non-profit organization that works to bring resources to those who have life-limiting illnesses, diseases, or injuries. They also have services and support for those patients’ caregivers. They have a free class called Caregiving 101 that can help you learn the basics of being a caregiver if you are new to this.

They also have a support group that meets once a month. The meetings are a place where you can go to get support if you feel like you’re alone in your job. Hospice Savannah also has the Edel Caregiver Institute that can help further your education on caregiving as well as provide you with services to make your job easier. You can call the Institute at (912) 629-1331 for more information about classes and other programs.

Coastal Region Commission

The Coastal Region Commission serves as Savannah’s area agency on aging. They can help seniors gain access to services and programs that make aging at home easier, and they can help caregivers do their job.

They offer a Caregiver Assistance Program (CAP) to help you find respite care if you need to take a break or are going to be away for an extended period. They also have the REACH program that is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association. This program helps teach caregivers how to care for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia and gives them support along the way. You can call (800) 580-6860 for more information.

Center For Successful Aging

At the Center for Successful Aging, seniors can find programs and services to help them maintain their integrity, as they get older. They can assist you with daily chores, provide assistance through their helpline, and even deliver services like pet therapy and counseling services.

The Center also offers support groups for seniors and their caretakers. These groups usually meet twice a month in various locations so you can find one that fits your schedule. If you can’t make it to a meeting, you can also call their phone reassurance program to get the support and encouragement you need through the phone. You can call (805) 898-8080 for more information.

Senior Citizens Inc.

Senior Citizens Inc provides a broad range of services for seniors including home delivered meals, in-home assistance, transportation, and adult day care. They have a learning center where seniors can learn about computers, or other technology-based courses and caretakers can learn how to do their job better.

Senior Citizens Inc also has a caregiver support group that meets monthly and allows you to share advice and stories with other caregivers. If you’re interested in this group and would like to know more, you can call (912) 236-0363.
