Defining Medicare

The federal health insurance program is available to Americans age 65 and older (as well as others with disabilities). It is divided into four coverage parts.

Part A (hospital insurance) covers inpatient hospital care, a specific and limited range of skilled nursing and home health care, and hospice services.

Part B (medical insurance) covers many physician visits, supplies, preventative care, and some outpatient services.

Part C (Medicare Advantage plans) consists of a selection of optional Medicare Advantage Plans through a private company which then supplies you with Parts A and B along with its own prescription coverage.

Part D (prescription drug coverage) is an add-on prescription medication coverage program.
