Sarasota Volunteer Opportunities for Seniors

Most seniors want to spend their retirement years pursuing their passions and working on important causes. Thankfully, in the Sarasota community, your time, experience, and skills can go to good use. Whether you are into teaching children, improving literacy, caring for animals, spending time in nature, or anything else, there are sure to be opportunities available for you.

Teach and Tutor Children

In the Sarasota County Library System, you are welcome to work side by side with library staff. There is an ongoing need for volunteers to make the libraries truly shine. There are positions open serving as a bookstore clerk, tutor, program assistant, sorter, and shelver.

During the summer, Sarasota County Schools needs volunteer reading tutors to work one-on-one with students to improve their reading skills. There are also plenty of opportunities to help in schools near you during the school year. Some of these include assisting teachers in elementary school reading classes, assisting teachers in middle school or elementary math classes, mentoring students at all levels, and much more.

You might also consider serving as a Foster Grandparent Volunteer. This program offers a way for volunteers aged 55 and better to stay active serving in their communities as mentors, friends, and role models to children and youth with exceptional need. You are expected to serve for 15 to 40 hours per week in locations like daycare facilities, schools, and hospitals. In return, you get the satisfaction of knowing you have changed a youngster’s life as well as a small stipend and other benefits.

Care for Animals

Consider volunteering at Sarasota Jungle Gardens if you are searching for a way to make an impact in the community and are an animal lover at heart. They have opportunities in numerous departments including special events, gardening, and the animal department. They just ask for a minimum six-month commitment.

For nearly a quarter of a century, the Humane Society of Sarasota County’s Pet Therapy Program has provided certified pet therapy volunteer teams to area schools, nursing homes, libraries, social service agencies, and assisted living facilities. You can have your dog or other pet certified as a member of the pet therapy team to provide much-needed comfort to vulnerable locals.

The Sarasota Agricultural Fair is the perfect spot to get involved with caring for animals. There are 4-H and Future Farmers of America events, competitions, and more. You can serve as a judge or become a committee member.

Work in a Garden

Volunteers are at the heart of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota. They play a vital role in the mission of conservation, horticultural display, and research. Some of the typical positions include horticulture assistants, walk & talk guides, display plants inventory assistants, school group guides, kids corner volunteers, and many others.

We have just scratched the surface when it comes to volunteer opportunities for golden agers in Sarasota. As you do your research, you are sure to uncover positions that are ideal for keeping you engaged, busy, and social.
