Sarasota has a surprisingly extensive collection of Catholic senior programs for a town of its size. Just about any need a retired person may have, from home-delivered meals and other basic help to counseling services and financial assistance, is served by the Diocese of Venice in Florida and the local Catholic Charities chapters.
In November 2014, the Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice opened the Golden Gate Senior Center in nearby Naples, Florida. Each weekday they provide nutritious hot meals to local seniors. In addition, there is a wide array of programs that keep even the most active older adults busy. Activities include exercise classes, sewing groups, bingo, dominoes, and board games. They also provide classes covering a range of topics from computer training to English as a second language. There are also haircuts, a prescription glasses program, classes to assist retirees in being money smart, monthly birthday parties, health screenings, support for people who want to find work, and much more.
When it comes to health care, there are on-site referral services and agencies that visit to make sure seniors are receiving their proper medical and financial benefits.
The Senior Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice, Inc. has a number of programs designed to fit the unique needs of senior citizens. They have set up Senior Services at Villa San Marco in Venice and Senior Services at Holy Cross Manor in Palmetto. These facilities provide older adults with ongoing support and case management to help them remain healthy and active. In addition, Catholic Charities offers the following programs:
Housing – Catholic Charities offers two inexpensive housing complexes in Sarasota called St. Monica Residence and St. Dominic Manor. They are for low-income individuals and families. Through their Veteran’s House, needy veterans and their families can get housing. They also offer housing counseling and foreclosure prevention services to help you get out of debt, work with your lender in a default loan situation, and develop a financial budget.
Financial Assistance – If your medical bills are piling up or simply cannot afford your prescriptions, Catholic Charities can give you one-time financial assistance to get you through an economic crisis.
Professional Counseling – At the Catholic Charities Counseling Center in Sarasota, licensed therapists offer couples, family, and individual counseling. The program focuses on the mental health needs of seniors suffering from anxiety, abuse, transition and loss, anger, self-esteem issues, substance abuse, trauma, aging, conflict, and depression.
Senior Support Program – It can be difficult to take care of necessities when you are living on a fixed income. Catholic Charities recognized a need in the community and started this Senior Support Program. With this program, a case worker comes to the home of retirees to find out their needs and provide them with food, household items, personal care items, and furniture.
