San Jose provides seniors with places to visit and things to do on a shoestring budget. Depending on the facility, you may be eligible for a senior discount beginning at age 60 with a few venues beginning their senior discounts at age 50. The following is a list of nine places to visit in San Jose to get you started.
View the Egyptian galleries at this museum that include exhibits depicting burial practices, mummies, Egyptian gods, kings, pharaohs, and everyday daily life. A large statue of the well-known Cleopatra can be found in the Kingship Gallery.
Stroll through the more than 4,000 roses in the 5.5-acre park. The roses bloom during the months of April through November with their peak of color and aroma in May. You will want to bring a camera to catch the beauty of the roses surrounding a large fountain.
The mysterious stories behind Sarah Winchester’s house and the constant construction are brought to life during a tour of the Victorian home. You can also tour the gardens with 100 year old rose bushes and ferns as well as the Winchester Historic Firearms Museum.
The zoo offers a Senior Safari Walkabout on select Thursdays in 2016 with free admission and parking for seniors age 50 and over. You can participate in the 10,000 Step Program, exercise, and enjoy the various mammals, reptiles, and birds in residence.
Whether you enjoy contemporary art, photography, or figure studies, the Museum of Art has it and more. With new collections added on a consistent basis, you can find plenty to see and study in the facility.
Relive San Jose history at the History Park. The outdoor museum consists of several buildings with 1800s furnishings and exhibits. The buildings include a hotel, schoolhouse, fire station, post office, and more.
Tour the magnificent cathedral with its stained glass windows and Latin frieze dating back to the late 1800s. Two of the windows were made in Italy and 16 were made in Munich using an outdated 11th century formula on mouth-blown Bavarian glass. Walk through the restored church and admire the chandeliers, paintings, and murals.
There is a great deal to do at the park located in downtown San Jose. The 2.6 miles of trails are great for walking or bicycling. The Heritage Rose Garden features 3,700 varieties of roses to discover and the Historic Orchard with its renowned fruit trees are a must-see for every visitor or new resident. This science museum is fun for all ages with interactive exhibits, including robotics, DNA, earthquake platform, innovations in health care, cybersecurity, and more. You can view a movie on the IMAX dome theater for an immersive experience and have lunch in The Tech Café.
