As the tenth most populous city in the United States nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, there is always something to do in San Jose. With all of the arts, history, sports, and cultural events in the area, you are sure to find plenty of opportunities to get out of the house, entertain the grandkids, or just spend some time with friends.
Located in downtown, the San Jose Museum of Art is one of the premier modern art museums in the country. Since its founding in the ‘60s, it has hosted a large permanent collection of West Coast artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. There are over 2,000 works in an array of media, such as photographs, prints, sculptures, drawings, digital media, and paintings. There are also several performing arts companies in town, including Opera San Jose.
Arranged to appear as a small US town might look in the early 20th century, the History Park at Kelley Park is designed as an indoor/outdoor museum. Since it first opened in the early ‘70s, the park has accumulated 29 historic buildings and other landmarks that were either relocated from the original San Jose locations or represented by replicas. The most prominent feature is the 115-foot half-scale replica of the San Jose Electric Light Tower.
Within its city limits, San Jose possesses almost 16,000 acres of parkland. In Kelley Park, there is the small Happy Hollow Park & Zoo which is a children-centric amusement park and zoo. There are about 150 animals that kids can interact with. There are several beautiful gardens throughout San Jose, including the Japanese Friendship Garden and the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden. The Overfelt Gardens are perhaps the largest at 33 acres. It features the Chinese Cultural Garden and is designated as a California Native Plant and Wildlife Sanctuary.
There is only one major professional sports team that calls San Jose home, but there are several others within a short drive of the city. The National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks play at the SAP Center at San Jose, and they have come close to winning the Stanley Cup in recent years. The San Francisco 49ers National Football League team plays their home games in neighboring Santa Clara.
There are a number of events throughout the year that bring San Joseans together. In downtown San Jose, the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest attracts people from all over the region for three days of R&B, jazz, blues, Latin, salsa, and other music styles. Christmas in the Park is another must-see event. From the end of November to January 1, almost half a million people enjoy the Christmas-related exhibits in Plaza de César Chávez Park.
There are several ways to unwind in San Jose where there are about 100 day spas. Two of the top options are Burke Williams Day Spa and Atelier Salon & Atelier Studio in West San Jose. Get a facial or massage with a friend or by yourself.
