Retirement is an exciting time full of big changes and Social Security is one of them. You might not have had to deal with Social Security benefits before and the whole process might seem confusing or frustrating. Fortunately, San Jose offers plenty of ways to get the help and advice you need for your benefits. They have a few local offices and the SSA has a great online program that can help you with whatever you need.
There are dozens of Social Security offices all over California but there are three that are located within the city limits of San Jose.
Social Security office at 28 S. First St. Second Floor Rm. 244 Social Security office at 6140 Cottle Rd. Social Security office at 2500 Fontaine Rd.
There are also a few offices nearby in neighboring communities:
Campbell Social Security office at 770 W. Hamilton Ave. Campbell, CA Mountain View Social Security office at 700 E. El Camino Real, Suite 350 Mountain View, CA
If none of these locations are close to you, you can either use the SSA office locator to find an office that is nearest to your zip code. Or you can call the toll-free number at (800)-772-1213 or TTY services at (800)-325-0778. Monday through Friday from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. there is a live representative available and there is also a 24-hour automated service.
While you will mostly be using Social Security for retirement, there are still services available to you if you aren’t ready to stop working. If you’re on disability but still want to work and support your family, you have options.
Two work incentive programs that could help you out are Ticket to Work and Plan for Achieving Self-Support (PASS). With Ticket to Work, you can still receive disability benefits while getting job training and advancing your career so you can improve your economic status. PASS allows you to get disability benefits while working towards a job goal like a higher paying job or starting your own small business.
Your local office is also where you can go to plan for your retirement and apply for retirement benefits. If you have a disability or are the survivor after a loved one’s death, you can apply for those benefits as well. If you would like to request a speaker to give a presentation about Social Security to a large group, like an assisted living facility, you can do that as well.
Finally, your office can take care of things like replacing your Social Security card if it’s lost or you name has changed. They can also give you a new Medicare card if that is lost or damaged.
Perhaps you’re good with a computer and you would rather avoid standing in a long line at your local office. Luckily, the SSA has a great and easy to navigate online program that allows you to get everything you need right online. These services include things like:
Find out if you qualify for benefits Appeal a decision Estimate future benefits View current earnings Block electronic access to your information
You can also find online tools to make planning your retirement and using your benefits easier and customized to your needs. The only thing you have to do to use these programs is create an online account at My Social Security. This is a secure website that will protect your information as you use the tools online.
