San Jose Volunteer Opportunities for Seniors

Retirement opens a whole new world that provides you with the opportunity to enjoy life and to reap the rewards of many years of hard work. One of the benefits of retirement is having extra time on your hands to get involved in your community. This list of volunteer opportunities includes some of our top favorites for the San Jose area.

Lend a Helping Hand at Local Parks and Zoos

The Happy Hollow Park and Zoo have volunteer opportunities that include greeting and educating visitors and participating in the docent-training program. Docents work alongside staff during special events and help to educate visitors and guests. Volunteers that enjoy working with animals can train as a keeper aide, prepare meals, and clean exhibit areas.

The Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley welcomes the efforts of volunteers to help staff in a variety of ways. You can assist with administrative tasks such as data entry and help staff with animal care. Other ways you can get involved include community outreach and education, fundraising, and working on the Center's newsletter.

The City of San Jose sponsors an Adopt-A-Park program that regularly relies on the support of volunteers. Options include helping out during special events and teaching the residents about caring for the land and open spaces. The program provides the opportunity to adopt and care for trails, trees and shrubs, flowerbeds, sports fields, and more.

Share Your Knowledge at the Tech Museum and Public Library

If the world of technology inspires you, consider volunteering at the Tech Museum of Innovation. Volunteers can help in several positions including support during evening events or work as a weekday exhibit interpreter. They can also welcome visitors to the museum as a guest greeter. Volunteers get free admission and downtown parking along with special discounts.

Volunteer opportunities at the San Jose Public Library include tech mentors and adult tutors with the Partners in Reading program. If you enjoy books, the library can use your talents to help shelve and organize materials. Offer your time and help as a reading volunteer or homework club coordinator.

Volunteer Options for Art and Quilts Enthusiasts

If you love art, the San Jose Museum of Art has numerous opportunities for volunteers to share their talent. You can work in the Museum Store for a few hours twice monthly. Other options include volunteering as a docent. The program for docents includes a training course to teach volunteers the skills and knowledge necessary to be efficient tour guides for the Museum.

The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles relies upon the efforts of volunteers in a variety of positions. Help the Museum by being a gallery guide or work within the gift shop. Volunteers also assist staff during special events, receptions, and exhibits. Volunteers receive rewards with a Museum store discount, special parties, and tours led by curators.

San Jose offers a wonderful array of opportunities for volunteers to share their talent and help others. This guide explores a handful of options for you to participate in and enjoy while giving back to those in the community.
