San Diego Senior Services

There are so many things to love about senior living in San Diego where the ocean is calming and flowers bloom in every color of the rainbow. Temperatures are not extreme, with average temperatures ranging in the 70’s. San Diego is a quaint area for browsing around the farmer’s markets or shopping in Old Town. It helps that the housing is highly affordable and the seafood is fresh and tasty. Seniors who need a little help will find it among the public and private organizations in and around San Diego.

San Diego City Senior Services administers nine senior centers where seniors can enjoy recreational activities and other programs. Seniors can choose from dance, sports, fitness, and therapeutic recreation. Other activities include arts and crafts, talent shows, and entertainment. The programs are provided by the city of San Diego.

Aging and Independence Services serves San Diego seniors to help keep seniors in their homes as long as possible. The organization provides caregiver support, adult day care programs, care coordination, service linkage, fitness clubs, intergenerational programs, legal services, mental health services, nutrition and meals, and veteran’s services. They also provide cooling centers so seniors can get relief from the heat.

Serving Seniors offers innovative programs for seniors regardless of race, color, religion, gender, marital status, gender identity, national origin, place of birth, ancestry, citizenship or disability. The program wraps services around seniors that include nutritious meals, health education, social services, case management, housing, and educational opportunities.

The San Diego LGBT Community Center provides support for LGBT seniors who often feel more alone than heterosexual seniors. The center offers support, acceptance, and education for seniors who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Typical activities include card parties, game days, writing classes, workshops, and educational workshops. The program offers housing and help with healthcare and social services.

Rancho Bernardo Senior Services is a local nonprofit organization that provides a variety of free senior services. Some of the services include legal and professional services, financial planning, notary services, Medicare services, health services, transportation, rehabilitation, and educational workshops.

Elder Law and Advocacy is a law firm that offers legal services regarding senior financial matters, elder abuse, landlord and tenant problems, contractual disputes, consumer issues, and problems accessing benefits. Lawyers will also help prepare documents such as wills, healthcare documents, guardianship, and power of attorney documents. They will refer other matters to other competent attorneys.

St. Paul’s Senior Services serves the physical, spiritual, and social needs of San Diego’s seniors. The program provides independent communities, assisted living communities, and skilled nursing communities. Seniors who enjoy children may enjoy participating in the intergenerational day care programs. It is a faith-based program and accepts seniors from all denominations. Care managers help seniors access affordable, innovative and comprehensive programs that give them opportunities for all stages of elder life.

These organizations, and many others in San Diego, provide all that seniors need with regard to their health, social, emotional, and recreational needs. The housing options are varied enough for every budget.
