Your options for lending an extra hand are many and include volunteering at the city’s arts and history museums, and getting involved in community events. Here is a handful of some of our top favorites for volunteers to explore.

Volunteering at the Public Library and Powerhouse Science Center

Volunteers can help others in their community by sharing their skills at one of the 28 branches of the Sacramento Public Library. The city’s library system can use volunteers as adult literacy and ESL (English Second Language) tutors. Get involved and assist library staff with special programs and community events. The Sacramento Public Library welcomes volunteers that can mentor and teach others.

The Powerhouse Science Center located at the Discovery Museum Campus in Sacramento has opportunities for volunteers to help in a variety of areas. Helping Out with Community Projects and Events

Duties may include meeting and greeting the public and answering questions, handing out brochures, and helping to prepare for upcoming events. Annual events include the Save Mart Grape Escape and the Farm-to-Fork Celebration.

Volunteers that enjoy gardening will find opportunities to help prune and maintain the McKinley Rose Garden. This project is part of the nonprofit Friends of East Sacramento and the city’s Community Adopt a Park program. Volunteers will remove old flowers in the effort to maintain the beauty of the garden and its 1,200 rose bush plants. A 30-minute training session is available for beginning gardeners.
