LGBT Senior Services in Rochester

Located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Rochester is a surprisingly gay-friendly city. There are plenty of LGBT locations for people to gather, as well as shopping areas, restaurants, and bars to frequent. The city is far more progressive than it may seem.

Neighborhood Living

South Wedge is a gay-friendly community within Rochester. A number of bars and restaurants are located in the nearby vicinity. The Bachelor Forum is one option. It is a gay landmark in the city that is known for old-school space. There are weekly drink specials, as well pool tables, darts, and various TVs for additional entertainment.

Those looking for a laid back atmosphere can visit 140 Alex Bar & Grill. This LGBT-friendly classic pub offers comfort food. There are weekend drag performances for patrons to enjoy.

The Landing of Brighton is a classy community in the area. The apartment-like feel allows seniors to feel independent and maintain their own living space. Regular cleaning and provided meals are added benefits.

Those looking for a more unique living space can select Atria Greece. A nice outdoor area is included where residents can enjoy some time. There are also group outings to nearby hotspots for a fun day out. There is even an aviary section inside where birds are kept for the residents to look after.

Community Events

The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley offers a number of events. Ride for Pride is one option, which allows sponsors to support to bike riders so money can be made for the Gay Alliance. This money allows the alliance to put on other events throughout the year, offer education to those in need, and continue to provide assistance to those in Rochester.

Rochester Pride, also known as ROC Pride Fest, is also held each year. It is the largest pride festival north of New York City, and is typically celebrated mid-July. Anyone willing to help set up, manage a booth, or otherwise help out during the event can sign up to do so. The festival could not be successful without the help of volunteers.

Searching for Support

SAGE Rochester partners with the Gay Alliance to offer assistance to older gay, lesbian, transgender, and other identifying residents of the area. Access to special senior services is provided, as is a connection to a community. Members can regularly meet and talk in order to receive support during a trying time.

The National Resource Center on LGBT Aging offers additional New York-based resources. There are other groups throughout the area that can people can utilize. There are State Lifespan Respite Programs, as well as Alzheimer’s Associations that allow either seniors or their caregivers to attend necessary groups and outings.

SAGEDAY partners with the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. It is the first LGBT-inclusive adult day program. The SAGE Center in Midtown Manhattan is where it is located.

Assisted living in Rochester offers a place for seniors to stay so they can be independent, yet still receive the assistance they need. They are then free to explore the many LGBT offerings in the area.
