Catholic Health Care in Riverside

For a city of its size, Riverside has a surprisingly comprehensive array of Catholic senior programs. The local Catholic Charities chapters and the Diocese of San Bernardino offer solutions to just about any need an older adult may have from rehabilitative care and skilled nursing to basic help, like home-delivered meals. Health care plans, hospice care, and case management are also offered in the area.

Catholic Outreach Services for Seniors

Catholic Charities San Bernardino & Riverside Counties offer an array of services that increase the well-being, stability, safety, and health of retired adults. Their services are usually in response to a crisis that has already occurred, and they intervene to prevent the crisis from getting worse. They also work to prevent crises before they occur and to keep crises from recurring. Catholic Charities also offers a variety of services for homebound Californians, such as wellbeing check visits, support groups for home caregivers, case management services, and meal delivery.

Active Catholic Senior Living

Through the nonprofit sponsorship of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino, St. Bernardine Plaza is able to provide 150 apartments to active senior citizens. This contemporary, twelve-story building was specially designed for older adults. Each unit has a kitchen living room, private balcony, bath, and one bedroom. The first floor features a comfortable library, building offices, a billiards room, a crafts room, a spacious lobby, and a large recreation room. The building also has coin-operated laundry and a card room.

Catholic Health Care Facilities in Riverside

There are two main Catholic health care facilities in and around Riverside. St. Bernardine Medical Center is located in San Bernardino and was started in 1931 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Today, the medical center has grown into a 342-bed, not-for-profit health care facility delivering quality, and compassionate care to anyone who enters their doors. To meet the needs of Catholic seniors, they have cutting-edge equipment and expert staff.

St. Joseph Health, St. Mary is nearby in Apple Valley. They help just about everyone in the community with services ranging from state of the art medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures to prevention and wellness programs. By continuing to plan and innovate for the future, St. Mary has grown to become a leader in medical excellence. The started as a small facility 60 years ago and have since become a large 212-bed hospital with more than 300 doctors.

Advocacy for Catholic Health Care

California’s Catholic health systems and hospitals are represented by the Alliance of Catholic Health Care. They strengthen the Catholic healthcare ministry in the state by offering forums in which ministry leaders can collaborate on ministry leadership formation, church relations, advocacy, and other issues that enhance the common good. The Alliance advocates for strengthening Medi-Cal and Medicare, serving those in need, protecting religious freedom, and promoting not-for-profit health care. By helping protect and serve the needs of Catholic health care systems and hospitals, they help area seniors.
