Medicare in Phoenix

In Maricopa County, more than half a million residents receive benefits from Medicare, and many of them are seniors. If you or someone you love are looking for answers on enrollment or coverage, or if you’re searching for a participating hospital, nursing home, or doctor who accepts Medicare, there are resources locally and online who can assist you.

What is Medicare? The basics

Medicare is designed as an insurance program through the federal government for American seniors ages 65 and above (and some younger individuals who meet the criteria), and consists of 4 parts: Medicare A, B, C, and D.

Part A provides coverage for inpatient hospital care, limited coverage for skilled nursing and home healthcare that meets very specific criteria, and services provided by hospice. Part B provides coverage for the majority of physician visits, medical supplies, well checks, and a limited amount of outpatient services. Part C is available by selecting a Medicare Advantage Plan whereby a private company will supply you with Parts A and B, and will typically couple the coverage with prescription coverage. Part D is a prescription medication program that you can add-on for additional coverage.

Finding Phoenix Medicare providers

You can find doctors in the Phoenix-area who are Medicare-friendly with their Physician Compare tool online. A quick search of providers who accept full Medicare assignment and do not charge patients anything beyond your Medicare deductible and coinsurance reveals nearly 30 geriatric physicians in a 15-mile radius of Phoenix, and over 350 doctors who practice family medicine. For even more options, you can expand to doctors who accept patients with Medicare but who may have charges in addition to the fee-for-service rates, as long as you're comfortable with the cost difference.

On the site you can click directly on the names of doctors for details on their office location and how to contact them, the type of payments from Medicare they take, locations they have hospital privileges, and if they have colleagues in the same group. At the moment, tools that allow for comparison are only available for group practices, but Medicare will soon introduce a feature that allows users to compare doctors.

The website also has search and comparison capabilities for over 70 nursing homes certified by Medicare and Medicaid in the Phoenix area. Included are the ratings by facility on their health inspection history, resident care quality, staffing, and overall performance. Similar tools exist to assist you with finding hospitals, home healthcare services, medical equipment and supplies, and dialysis centers in the area.
