Your Online Social Security Account

It’s a good idea to set-up your online Social Security account after you’ve been working for several years. Even if you won’t be retiring for many years, your online account offers you the ability to review your Social Security account to make sure that it’s accurate. You can log into your account at any time and review your Social Security statement to make sure that it accurately reflects your income. You can also use your online account to get estimates of future benefits or survivorship benefits, so that you can adequately prepare for retirement.

The online system for Social Security is called MySocialSecurity. Setting up your account is easy, but it will require entering some personal information. To start, click on the link to create an account. Follow the prompts to complete setting up your account. The system will ask you some personal, identifying information. It will ask you questions that only you will likely know the answers to. This is nothing to be alarmed about. It’s a built-in security feature that is designed to protect your identity and Social Security account.

Divorce and Social Security

The Social Security Administration has rules for divorced people. You can receive benefits based upon an ex-spouse’s earnings record if you were married for at least ten years, you are 62 years old or older, and are single. If you claim your ex-spouse’s benefits prior to full retirement age, you can get up to 50% of the total benefit. Applying for the benefit prior to full retirement will net you reduced benefits.

Your ex-spouse will not be aware that you claimed against his or her earnings unless you reveal that information. Your claim will not affect your ex-spouse’s benefits nor that of your ex’s new spouse. Ex-spouse rules differ from regular spousal benefit in that if your ex-spouse has not yet applied for benefits, the other spouse can claim benefits once they have been divorced for two years.
