Home to more than 406,000 people, Oakland must include plenty of popular attractions to keep everyone busy. While some cost more to utilize, there are plenty of low-cost options in the city. Visit a museum, see historical sites, or rejoice in the fresh air outdoors when you visit one of the many attractions in the Oakland area.
The Oakland Museum of California not only features artistic beauty but historical artifacts, interactive displays and scientific findings as well. Take in all the museum has to offer when you go between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm, Wednesday and Thursday, with extended hours on the weekends. Seniors over 65 get a discount on admission, and members who pay a yearly fee can get in free each time after that.
The Dunsmuir House sits on 50 acres. The historic estate allows visitors from 11 am to 4 pm Tuesdays through Fridays. It is free to walk through the gardens, but you must pay a small fee if you want a tour of the mansion itself. Tours only occur between April and September on Wednesdays only.
When you want to rejoice in the fresh air after being stuck inside for so long, take a trip to the Oakland Zoo. It spans 100 acres, giving you plenty of space to stretch your legs. Pygmy goats, lemurs, wallaroos, chinchillas, flying foxes, and more call the zoo home. Seniors over 65 get a discount on entry.
The Oakland Raiders are the city’s football team, playing at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum. The Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball share the stadium, with games held in different seasons. You get single tickets for a specific game you want to see.
The Alameda County Fair gives you something to look forward to each year in June. It is held at the fairgrounds in Pleasanton, which is just a half hour away. Enjoy some fair food, play games, or go on a carnival ride. The county fair is not the only time the fairgrounds get used. Additional events are held at the location throughout the year, including an inflatable 5k run. Bounce your way through the course and see how you do.
You do not have to spend the entire day on the go enjoying the sights. You can also spend time relaxing at the various locations throughout Oakland, including Rockridge Day Spa, Oakland Spa, and Organic Bliss Day Spa. Rockridge offers organic and vegan products. You can enjoy a cup of tea while relaxing in their zero gravity chair. Organic Bliss specializes in body sugaring. Sugar works well if you have sensitive skin, while a salt scrub is ideal for those with oily skin.
