Medicaid in Oakland

Many seniors in Oakland rely on Medicaid to pay for in-home care, adult day programs, and medical coverage. Without the insurance, most would be without care coverage and unable to pay billing costs. Oakland has extensive resources for seniors in need of assistance.

Receiving Medicaid Benefits in California

No one can receive Medicaid benefits in California until they apply for coverage. Even then, the application must show they meet the requirements. People above the income limit do not qualify. Tax statements or check stubs may be needed to prove your income level and verify you are below the limit to obtain coverage. Seniors 65 and older can apply, as can people with a long-term disability. Men and women who are both of an older age and have a disability are more likely to receive the help.

Seeking Help With Applications and Claims

You can find help with your application and any future claims by visiting an application center in Oakland. The Enterprise Office for Alameda County Social Services provides the primary solution. Its location is 8477 Enterprise Way. You can visit them in person or call their number to speak to a representative at (510) 777-2300.

Obtaining Senior Services Through Medicaid

You can get senior services through Medicaid. These include hospice care, adult day services, in-home caregiving, and more. To be approved, you must first speak with both your doctor and your insurance provider to ensure you qualify. You also need to verify the amount of days or price covered, so you know what to expect in terms of out-of-pocket expenses.

Getting Rides to and From Medical Appointments

Medicaid provides medical transportation to and from appointments so you can receive all the care you need. This option is not for everyone and is only intended for those who genuinely require the service. You should always try your best to find a ride elsewhere, as this is a last resort provided to those in desperate situations.

You must call up to 48 hours in advance to ensure a ride is available. If one is not available to you, other transportation services in Oakland will get you where you need to go. You may need to pay for these out of pocket instead of by Medicaid though, so you should be aware of the associated costs.
