Best of Oakland Senior Living

As people age, everyday life tasks start to become more and more difficult to manage. Senior communities across the U.S. provide assistance to those who need the extra help. SeniorAdvisor.com is an excellent source when searching for the right facility to reside at for the remainder of your life. The website provides an award-winning list of providers in any given area, including Oakland. Check out their site to see the Best of Senior Living Award winners in the city.

Places That Provide Daily Assistance

Some older adults require daily assistance. Cooking, bathing, transportation, and housekeeping all prove to be too difficult to handle alone. In these cases, it is best to find a place that provides assisted living. You get to have free time to complete your favorite activities and work on wellness, yet have helped any time a day it is needed.

Belmont Village San Jose, less than an hour away from Oakland, earned the 2017 Best of Assisted Living Award. The facility sits near both Santana Row, the renowned shopping center, and the Winchester Mystery House. The active Resident Council offers insight to the community on the best food, lifestyle, and group activities you can choose.

Reviewers indicate how smooth the transition is from their old home to their new living space. “The move was seamless, and we didn’t have to do anything,” writes one woman. The care is also excellent, points out another family member. “He gets wonderful care, and the caregivers treat the residents with such respect and concern for their well-being.”

Also in San Jose, Villa Fontana Retirement offers semi-private, studio, and one-bedroom options to residents. You can have your own space or share with a roommate, which saves on costs. The facility allows pets, so you can bring along your companion or get a new animal to keep you company for the duration of your stay.

One visitor discussed the “very clean facility and very nice staff.” Everyone looking to move to this location receives a guided tour and gets all their questions answered. The place is kept well-maintained, and the staff is courteous and understanding.

Memory Care Facilities

Many senior communities offer memory care to people with Alzheimer’s or dementia. All staff is trained in this particular kind of care to ensure adequate supervision. There is also added security, so the grounds are safe for any residents who tend to wander.

Fremont Hills, located just 26 miles away in Fremont, got rated one of the Best of 2017 for Assisted Living. There is an assisted living community as well as a memory care community located there. The memory care portion of the facility focuses on keeping Alzheimer’s and dementia patients safe. Nurses work with the residents regularly on memory-related tasks, even as something simple as memory games.

During an initial tour, one reviewer says they were able to see everything necessary to make the decision to move. “The tour guide was able to answer all of my questions and show me around the entire building,” she says. Another reviewer noted, “they offer daily activities,” providing all residents with the chance to participate.

Communities That Offer Independence

Active retirees who want to reside in a close-knit community yet still have their freedom can seek out independent living options. You get your own space but do not have to worry about cumulative upkeep and maintenance like you would with a house. You mostly live on your own but have staff members on site to handle maintenance and housekeeping.

Brookdale Fremont earned its award in 2017. The facility offers various living choices, including a studio, one-bedroom, two bedrooms, or semi-private suite. The home-like setting keeps residents comfortable, while the restaurant-style dining gives them a sense of being in the outside world. There are plenty of activities, clubs, and special events to attend as well.

Fun, friends, and food is the name of the game at Brookdale according to one member’s daughter. “My mother is doing great here,” she writes, “ she is making new friends and loves the food as well as the activities.” Another woman talks about how the dining experience is excellent. She also enjoys the meals provided.

The Regency of Evergreen Valley less than an hour away in San Jose earned its award due to the high ratings from customers. All residents receive the services they need while also getting to enjoy a carefree lifestyle. With full amenities included, everyone can live life to the fullest and spend their time doing the things they love.

The patio area gives a great nature-feel that offers a serene setting. One guest talked about how well he “liked the nature feel of the patio and walking area.” Another noted that the “maintenance is on top of things… the workers are friendly [and] the [employees] that work in the kitchen are very friendly and outstanding.” With such high praises for the staff, it’s easy to see why so many people feel comfortable in this atmosphere.

Group Homes

Seniors who prefer a home-like setting can reside in a group home rather than a living facility. The place resembles a typical house, yet has multiple rooms set up for numerous residents. Most of these locations are family-owned and operated, and the staff members are caregivers who work closely with each person residing there.

Sunnyvale, less than an hour away from Oakland, is home to the Parkview Residential Care Home II. With nurses on staff, all seniors living in the home receive the care they need. Each person gets a private room and shares the common areas.

Reviewers indicate a skilled staff and outstanding care. “We recommend this community for excellent care and value for families,” writes one family member. “The staff has been great and kind,” says another, “they are very skilled what they do.”
