Social Security for Newark Seniors

Social Security helps retirees earn an income.  It may be the only source of money for some seniors.  If you need help with your Social Security, you can visit an office for tasks and requests for things like replacing a lost or damaged card, applying for Social Security and Medicare benefits, or answering questions on your benefits.  There are other ways you can also contact the SSA and complete tasks, including visiting an area office, calling a toll-free number, or completing tasks online.

Area Social Security Offices

There are two Social Security offices in Newark.  One office’s address is 970 Broad Street, Room 1035.  The SSA office is inside the Peter Rodino Federal Building on the corner of Broad and Walnut. The main phone line is 1.800.772.1213.

The other office’s address is 274 Springfield Avenue, between Bedford Avenue and Hayes Street.

The main phone line for both offices is 1.800.772.1213.  The TTY line is 1.800.325.0778.  The offices are open Monday - Friday, with hours of 9-4 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The offices are open on Wednesday from 9-12.

There are more SSA offices in East Orange, Jersey City, Union, and Hoboken. To look for additional locations, add your zip code to the SSA’s online office locator. You will also find a link to other area agencies for assistance with other government services.

Social Security Services and Programs

You can visit a Social Security office to get help with several services such as getting a replacement card, changing your name, or if you have questions about any programs. At the office, you can also request a new or replacement Medicare card if yours is lost or damaged.

If you are under 65 and collect Social Security disability benefits, you may qualify for the SSA’s free “Ticket to Work” program to help you learn new work-related skills for work while you receive your benefits pay. Area agencies administer this program. To find the closest administrator to you or for additional questions, contact the main Helpline at 1.866.968.7842.

If you are part of a local club, group, or other senior community, you can request a speaker to discuss Social Security benefits. Fill out the online form at least 30 days before your event.  You can also ask for a translator in any language to complete presentations or help you understand your benefits.

Tasks You Can Complete Online

Going to a Social Security office may be too much of a hassle because of time and transportation. If you would rather not travel to the Social Security office, there are many tasks you can complete online.  Here are a few online services available on the SSA’s website:

Apply for Social Security benefits

Request a replacement card

Approximate future benefits

View and print your Social Security statements

Check eligibility for benefits

Appeal a recent medical decision

Review your claims status

You can also complete other SSA tasks online such as blocking online and phone access to Social Security information, which is critical for financial privacy reasons. You can also create a My Social Security account to review all your SSA benefit information including lifetime earnings, statements, and estimated retirement benefits. You can also update your contact information, update your direct deposit amounts and accounts, download a benefit verification letter, get a Medicare replacement card, and print forms (SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S) for tax preparation.
