Newark Aging-in-Place

Being at home is where you are most comfortable and would like to stay to live out your golden years. You can find a variety of services to help you live that dream and stay home comfortably and safely.  Homemaker services help you with various chores like cooking, cleaning, personal care, running errands, and transportation. There are also other in-home care services such as home health aides to help you with health conditions such as monitoring, medication, and therapy.

Who Pays for In-Home Care?

You may be able to get reimbursed for in-home care with a couple of different options if your doctor specifies you need in-home care to live at home independently. Your long-term care insurance policy may reimburse you for needed in-home care with the proper documentation from your physician. Low-income seniors may qualify for Medicaid to pay for in-home care expenses.

Some seniors may be eligible for New Jersey Division of Aging Services programs such as adult day care services, homemaker services, case management, and more. Wartime veterans and widows may be eligible for a VA Aid & Attendance pension that can be used to pay for in-home care expenses.

How Much Are In-Home Care Services?

Your cost to live at home depends on what services you require and if you need to update your home with any needed renovations for your daily living such as grab bars, wheelchair access, or any other additions to make your mobility easier.

In the US, the average daily rate was $122 for homemaking services and $125 for home health aide services, which equals about $3,800 monthly. In Newark, the costs are slightly more with the daily average price of $136 for homemaker services and $138 for home health aides, which is about $4,200 monthly when you sum up the daily totals.

How to Search for In-Home Service Providers

When you need to find a service, you can start your search by asking for referrals from people you trust such as friends, neighbors, church members, and other acquaintances.  The New Jersey Better Business Bureau website lets you search companies for ratings and reviews.

Ask a company about bonding, insurance, training, and their licenses. You should also ask how they screen employees such as identity verification and background checks.  Find out how the business schedules services and their payment procedure. Be sure to read the entire contract to be sure you understand the company’s policies.

When You Need More Help

You can find additional services when you need more help with special areas such as pet care, home renovations, or other home projects. You can find websites to connect you with people for assistance.

Rover.com lists local dog walkers and sitters. Favor and TaskRabbit are two sites for posting task or errand jobs. Porch.com and Amazon Home Services assist you with home tasks, projects, and renovations.  You should do your research before hiring any of these businesses or people by asking questions about employee screening, insurance, and payment.  Also, check for online reviews. Try to find out as much as you can before you select a business.
