New York Senior Centers

New York is known for being a fast-paced city, and in retirement, the plethora of things to do for seniors will keep you busy. Whether you’re looking for a fun game of cards, to learn a new skill to pick up a new hobby, to showcase your talents on stage or the dance floor, to meet new people and make new friends, or even to travel the world, there are many opportunities for you.

Shuffle and socialize

A weekly card game or a rousing round of bingo with friends is something many retirees look forward to. In New York City, you’re in luck. The New York City Department of Aging operates numerous Senior Centers in the boroughs of the City, and the NYC Parks Department manages senior-friendly programming at community centers throughout the area. For example, the Fort Hamilton Senior Recreation Center has daily card games for seniors, weekly Bridge tournaments, Mah Jongg throughout the week, and Bingo on select nights. Check your local recreation and community center schedules for options near to you. There are other senior programs in the area for specific demographics, like the United Chinese Association of Brooklyn who offer enrichment and socialization activities for seniors during the week.

Expand your knowledge base

They say knowledge is power, and retirement is one of the best times to learn a new skill. Whether you’re interested in brushing up on a foreign language, or how to create an artistic masterpiece, local community and senior centers offer weekly classes to help you grow. The Hinman Brown Senior Program at 92Y offers a range of classes for adults, including language, art, food and wine, sports, and creative writing programming.

Feel the burn and stay fit

A key to healthy aging is physical activity, and seniors in New York City have many fun programs to choose from to keep you fit. In addition to the Stay Well senior-specific classes offered at local community and senior centers, you can check out the Senior Fitness programs through the City Parks Foundation. The eight-week fitness classes are free of charge to seniors ages 60 and up, and include things like yoga, walking, or tennis lessons.

Take center stage

If you have a musical talent, the Seniors Orchestral Society of New York may be a perfect fit for you. Comprised entirely of seniors, the group is in their 4th season of performing free classical music concerts throughout the community. The 92Y Dance for Life classes are perfect for any toe-tapping seniors and programming can range from up tempo jazz to a soothing lyrical style. If you’re interested in taking the stage, check out the Senior Theater Acting Repertory. The Queens-based group is open to adults ages 50 and up and has been performing in the community for over 25 years.

Connect with people who have similar interests

You will be meeting lots of new people during your weekly activities, but sometimes it’s nice to join a group who you already know share your interests. The senior Meetup groups in New York City can be a great place to find new friends. The groups cater to dozens of different types of people, including different ethnic groups, interests, ages, and singles.

Follow your wanderlust

Retirement is one of the best times to fulfill your dreams of seeing the world. Adventure travelers can book small-group trips through travel agents like Elder Treks or Row Adventures where you’ll have a chance to have an active vacation in the country or abroad. Women traveling alone may consider contacting Women Traveling Together to help them plan their vacation. The agency books safe and exciting trips for small groups of women to places all over the world.
