With so many options in the area, each with their own character and unique amenities, you’re sure to find a good match for your needs.

In this article we’ll explore some of the important skilled nursing care details like what to expect in terms of monthly cost in the Memphis area, services provided at the facilities, and key things to look for when selecting a nursing home.

Memphis Nursing Home Facts and Figures

You’ll find over two dozen nursing homes in Memphis, the majority of which also have services for seniors in need of dementia care.

In 2014, over 27,500 seniors resided in a nursing home in the state of TN.

Long-term care services will be utilized by approximately two thirds of seniors at some point in their life.

A senior's average residence in long-term care is 3 years.

Around 20 percent of long-term care residents live in their facility 5 years or more.

What is the typical duration of a nursing home stay?

As we revealed in our facts and figures, seniors average around 3 years of residence in a nursing home. Typically women have longer stays as they have a longer life expectancy, but it’s important to recognize that every resident is different. Depending on medical needs and conditions, some residents could need care for just a few weeks while others may live in a nursing home for many years.

Generally, nursing homes house patients long-term who need around-the-clock access to care because of chronic health conditions. Short-term care is another option available and is commonly used following a hospitalization to provide care and rehabilitation before a patient is able to return to their home.

Another form of short-term care that is specific to Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and their caregivers is called respite care. If a caregiver needs a break for a short period of time to tend to their own needs, they can utilize respite care. This option is sometimes a great way to check out a facility in case it becomes medically necessary to explore long-term care options down the road.

Typical menu of services in nursing homes

Skilled nursing facilities have staff on hand to provide 24-hour care to residents within the home. Certified nurse assistants (CNA’s) are available to help residents with things like bathing, feeding, and personal care as well as medical needs like medication management and administration, wound care, and health check-ups. These CNA’s report to the facility registered nurse on each patient.

In addition to nursing care, some facilities offer additional on-site services like occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. Hospice may also be provided for terminal seniors and their loved ones.

Meals are included in nursing home amenities and will be both nutritionally balanced and in line with any doctor recommendations for each resident. Meals are served in a social dining room setting, but residents may also choose to eat in their rooms if they prefer.

Regular daily activities are at the core of nursing home programming and can include things like sing-a-longs, movie nights, holiday celebrations, or board games. Religious seniors may also have the option to participate in on-site worship services or study groups.

Some facilities take personal care a step further and have on-site beauty or nail salons and offer discounted appointments to residents.

Monthly cost of care in Memphis

The Cost of Care survey, conducted in 2015 by Genworth, finds that seniors in the Memphis area pay an average of $5,734 per month for a semi-private room, and $6,175 per month for a private room at a skilled nursing facility. These rates come in as lower than the averages in Tennessee of $5,840 per month for semi-private and $6,269 per month for a private room.

Remember that these are the average monthly rates, and you will likely find that the costs at one facility may be much different than at another depending on the size of the facility, the amenities and services offered, and the location of the property. Seniors with Medicaid should also note that they will need to search for Medicaid certified nursing homes who will have set rates for the program. Low-income seniors who don’t qualify for assistance from Medicaid may still be able to negotiate a lower rate with some non-profit facilities.

How to know if it’s a good nursing home

There are a number of things to look for when determining if a nursing home is a good fit. First, check to ensure they are properly licensed, they have a good history of resolving complaints, and they have clean state inspection reports. Take a tour of the facility and try the food, talk with the staff, and observe the cleanliness, staff interactions, building security, and the staff ratios at the property.

Take the time to check online reviews about the property, and do additional research by logging onto the Tennessee Commission of Aging and Disability website for more information about the property and others in your area.
