Louisville Volunteer Opportunities for Seniors

Enjoying the many things that life has to offer is much easier once you are retired. Having that extra time also provides you with the opportunity to share your time and talent with others by helping and giving back to the community. Here are a few of our favorite choices for volunteer opportunities.

Explore Volunteer Options at Museums and Libraries

Lend a helping hand by volunteering at the Louisville Free Public Library. Assist staff with book sales, special events, homebound delivery, and children’s service projects. Other areas where you can help include working on the youth advisory board, as a translator, or as a library program docent. Organize and help shelve books and other materials.

The Frazier History Museum has a variety of volunteer opportunities available. Share your time by helping staff with educational programs, special events, and exhibits. Greet visitors and take on the role of a gallery ambassador or storyteller. You can participate in gallery activities as you assist guests and answer questions.

The Kentucky Derby Museum welcomes volunteers to assist staff with a variety of projects. Get involved and help prepare brochures and mailings, greet visitors, and work on special events. Volunteers have the opportunity to meet people and make new friends while helping the community. Rewards include a museum membership and discounts at the Derby Café and Finish Line Gift Shop.

Opportunities in the Arts and Sciences

The Kentucky Science Center is in need of volunteers to help staff in a variety of positions. Share your knowledge and desire to teach others as an Ambassador for Science Literacy. Other positions where volunteers can work include information booth attendant, theater host, and luncheon host. Volunteers receive community service credit and get discounts at the gift shop plus free admission and parking.

More than 500 volunteers have shared their time and experience by helping the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. You can get involved and assist staff in a variety of roles. Options include volunteering as greeters, bus assistants, ticket ushers, tour guides, or working at the information desk. You can also help staff with office work including clerical tasks and administrative duties.

Working with Nature and Wildlife

If you enjoy the outdoors and working with wildlife, the Louisville Nature Center needs volunteers to help in a variety of jobs. Work alongside staff to maintain the butterfly gardens and native plant habitats. The bird feeders, trails, and pond also need regular maintenance and upkeep. Volunteers can also help with special events and work in the office by assisting staff with administrative tasks.

The Louisville Zoo has opportunities for volunteers to get involved and help in a variety of positions. You can work behind the scenes and assist staff with administrative tasks and office work. Other options include providing assistance during special events and working alongside staff to take care of the animals. Volunteers receive recognition at the annual dinner.
