Better staff would make the Churchill a better facility
Physically, the Churchill is a nice looking facility -- bright and modern looking. It has a good location in the downtown area, close to restaurants, public transit and interesting public spaces such as the art gallery, the library and Churchill Square with its many summer activities.
Staff wise, they have real problems though. Their management staff is knowledgeable and helpful but their front line care staff is poorly trained and constantly changing. There is a lack of accountability as well. No one knows where a missing piece of laundry or cutlery is and no one takes responsibility to find it. "Nursing" staff take no responsibility to tell anyone from the family if the pharmacy misses delivering needed prescriptions. I was told by the person in charge the day this happened to my husband that it was the pharmacy's job to ensure the prescriptions were actually delivered. True enough but when that did not happen, she did not think it was Churchill staff's responsibility to make a phone call to me or to the pharmacy to give anyone notice of the mistake. The result was, my husband (who suffers from dementia) missed some much needed prescription medication for over a day. This was dangerous and unacceptable.
Taking care of my Mom and Dad
My parents (92 and 93) have been residing at the Churchill for about 9 months now. Initially it was a huge change for them from their independent lifestyle but the staff has made them all feel so welcome and cared for - they're definitely happier (and I know safer) living at the Churchill. The services and resources provided are excellent - most of the nurses and staff know them by first name, and treat them with respect - bringing humour and even sometimes a much needed hug into their lives. They have made new friends - and are now settled very comfortably into their new home. Thank you for taking such great care of my Mom and Dad. I sincerely hope when my turn comes for assisted living there are wonderful places such as the Churchill.
It was nice but I don't like the location for safety reasons.
