Looking for the "Gold Standard" for aging parents.
My mother moved to Birkdale approximately 4 weeks ago. At the time of our initial tour and interview, we were very impressed with the cleanliness, the appearance and the overall feeling of the surroundings. Three of our main concerns before committing were the quality of care, administering of meds and the meals. We were assured that Birkdale excelled in all areas. We have not been disappointed with the health care/med services but another story when it comes to the food and the overall dining experience. Were were told that there are real Chefs who prepare all meals from scratch. This is definitely not the case and most food appears to be frozen or canned. We have brought our concerns to management several times and once again been assured that steps are being taken to improve the quality of service and the quality of food.
Side plates , maybe flowers on the tables, bread baskets with rolls, all of these little niceties are missing leading it to feel truly like an institution rather than a dining room.
My mother has moved from a "gold standard" retirement community in Toronto to be closer to me in Milton, we were hoping to continue her wonderful experience at Birkdale.
Activities are also lacking in a very large way and should be addressed with the activities director. Really need to step up the game.
Having said this, I don't think any of the negatives, cannot be turned into positives. Revera just needs to reassess and update their thinking and look for ways to elevate themselves to the "gold standard" we expect for our aging parents.
Birldale Place a Good Choice
Meals are great (quality, quantity, service), rooms are spacious, personal attention is excellent, although they appear to have limited experience with assisted-care issues.
It's clean and the staff is friendly.
It's clean and the staff is friendly. The food started out as good, but is maybe lacking a little in variety. They can be a little less prompt than my loved ones would like from time to time. They seem to have the activities you would expect here, and their pricing was about the same as the others, with some a little higher, and some a little lower. We chose them because they were in a good location for us, and had some availability, where others had a two year wait list.
